I think this argument is a crude analogue of the ‘born this way’ argument which LGBT activists used to great effect against conservatives who supported gay conversion therapy. It’s counter-intuitive because it seems to deny that gender is a social construct.

I think some people came here from X because they are nostalgic for a time when their voices had ‘power’. The last election revealed how illusory this power actually is, which is why ‘ban Jesse’ is such a high stakes game for these people. It’s not about Jesse, it’s about asserting relevance.

Twitter/X isn’t and never has been a ‘town square’ or a place to exchange ideas in good faith. It’s a platform that profits from avatars yell at each other. It’s built into the business model. If there’s less name-calling in a more curated platform like Blue Sky, surely that’s a good thing?

There have been a lot of times where I feel like we need to have honest discussions on the left about what has worked and what hasn’t, share observations without judgement, but it feels like there isn’t much space for it. I think it’s holding us back.

I wonder how and where we can accomplish that.
