Phew... where do we start. ST miscues (big returns, blocked FG). Goff inaccurate early. Passpro is not good enough; interior run blocking not good. D was okay, but missed tackles sprinkled about. LOTS of penalties and miscues. Team wasn't ready AT ALL.

Don't worry that you've never been to a protest before. Don't worry about being dressed wrong or looking out of place. Don't worry that you don't agree about everything -- or even about much -- with lots of people at the protest.

Two other effects highlighted in this talk:
1) Sat electrical discharges are strong enough to be measured on the ground (!!!)
2) Sat flybys are detectable electromagnetically.
Overall message: space is becoming more polluted, and we need to come to terms with that.
Greatly enjoyed this seminar by Dr. Jesse Woodroffe. Some human-space environment effects discussed that I hadn't thought about at all, including human-generated VLF radio signals being detected in space and potentially scattering particles!

Ah, yes- the Earth's well known... uh... quadrupole magnetic field.

Now, a press conference reveals that NO such symbols were found.
WSJ owes a full retraction and apology.

THERE WAS A BASKET CASE 2?!?!?!
Dst (one measure of storm strength) was only about -40nT or even around zero, depending on which calculation you use. For scientists, that's... almost not even a storm.
02.09.2025 12:20 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Very unfortunate storm in the end. The magnetic field of the storm was predominantly northward- meaning it could not effectively transmit energy to the Earth system, preventing the aurora from moving southward.
BOOOO!
Isle Royal (very near Canada!) is showing some color, but it's pretty diffuse right now. The storm isn't cooperating for us mid-latitude/lower Michigan folks right now. :(
www.nps.gov/isro/learn/p...
Storm is here! Solar wind speed is ~675 which might not be enough to push things south enough for us Michiganders. Magnetic field is yet to cooperate, but it's still early...
01.09.2025 21:37 — 👍 2 🔁 1 💬 0 📌 0YES!
Now before we all start reposting pseudo science craziness, let's get some speed estimates and remember that southward oriented magnetic field is important for creating aurora (and other "fun" effects) at Earth. In other words, it's going to be a bit before we know if we should be excited.
Today was a good day.
for running.
Just found out that Tohru Araki passed away. His work on storm sudden impulses was very important to me; I was lucky enough to meet him at a conference. Sad to see that he is no longer with us. :(
