And when I'm even getting rejected from internships I've applied to on account of not already having specific enough prior experience, this is a real farce!

Once again, my achievements and professional experience prior to entering academia are completely disregarded.

Never mind that I would crush this and that should be obvious from my CV.

Never mind that a PhD itself is meant to involve learning specific skills.

So I'm sure I would succeed at this. I think my CV demonstrates that. I've spent a year since graduating seeking internships and volunteer work.

Rejected.

Not even shortlisted for interview.

Reason: others have field experience specifically with great apes.

✔ Data management and analysis skills (MSc, internships, teaching)
✔ Related MSc (Animal Behaviour, Distinction)
✔ Interest in primate behaviour (internships, Primate Society workshop)
✔ Advanced scientific writing (thesis)

The successful candidates will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers in both research groups working on topics such as tool use, culture, communication, and cognition. Excellent collaborative, independent working and time management skills are essential. Previous field experience (incl. behavioural data collection) is required, and experience working in remote places under difficult living conditions is highly recommended. The project will require strong data management and data analysis skills, and 12-18 months of field work split into 2-3 periods. Candidates should have a M.Sc. degree or equivalent, a relevant background in Biology, Psychology, Anthropology or a related discipline, a strong interest in primate behaviour, and advanced scientific writing (in English). Start of the positions are ideally on 1 April 2026, or upon agreement. The positions are fully funded for max. 4 years.

Two PhD positions advertised. Look great, I would love to join!

Requirements are tough but don't look like anything I can't meet:
