Or set up a genetic rescue: bring in other subspecies of priests from other regions and release them in Ireland to breed with the native priests.

Tressie McMillan Cottom showed how to talk about political aesthetics while avoiding the pitfalls of talking about appearance. She has since made some killer observations about Noem's aesthetics too.

Demis Hassabis on our AI future: β€˜It’ll be 10 times bigger than the Industrial Revolution – and maybe 10 times faster’ The head of Google’s DeepMind says artificial intelligence could usher in an era of β€˜incredible productivity’ and β€˜radical abundance’. But who will it benefit? And why does he wish the tech giants had...

The Industrial Revolution offered immediate tangible benefits and a hope the environmental and social destruction would be fixed later. AI offers environmental and social destruction right now and a hope that tangible benefits will be discovered at some point in the future.

How to Upload an Image to a Bird Entertaining YouTuber Benn Jordan built a setup to record and analyze bird sounds, songs, and calls. He used it to record a starling who has mastered mimicking all sorts of manmade and artificial sounds in its environm

How to Upload an Image to a Bird. This is super cool and clever: this guy drew a picture of a bird, played it as a sound, a starling mimicked the sound, which was then decoded back into the bird picture. 🀯 [kottke.org]

It is sad how often climate activists and experts fall into this same trap. The solution is difficult. You need a concrete list of collective actions, campaigns, and orgs people can contribute to, from local up to international. It's hard to make that list and keep it current.

Decades of corporate propaganda framed this view. The whole idea of a 'carbon footprint' is fossil fuel propaganda promoting individual responsibility. Recycling plastic is part of a longstanding effort to increase the market for plastic and to frame solutions as individual actions.

It's like the plot of Scott Pilgrim. You will take your remaining sword, hunt down the wielder of each of your other swords and defeat them in single combat. Also, there can be only one.

The Democratic Party Needs to Learn from Zohran Mamdani's Guts and Backbone Zohran Mamdani did something different, and it made all the difference.

Providing an alternative to establishment politics and an increasingly right-leaning party made all the difference for Mamdani, politics editor @leximcmenamin.com argues in this op-ed.

That sounds incredibly frustrating. "Access to solve the problems" is weirdly absent from discussions about success. In my experience, that access is more important than status, education, and often, than ability. The people with the problems get to solve them. I wish you luck finding a path.

Again, New York City spends $12 billion a year on cops. Billion!

Cops that can't recover a stolen bike or smartphone that's covered in AirTags.

Cops that aren't good at solving murders.

Cops that cost so much that the city has had to shorten the operating hours of libraries and swimming pools.

The cover of THE BUTCHER OF THE FOREST by Premee Mohamed on a dark green background with floral motifs. In golden plaques, we see: LitHub, BookRiot, Washington Post, Polygon, and NPR Best Books of 2024; Amazon Editors' Choice Science Fiction & Fantasy; Aurora, Ignyte, Nebula, Locus, World Fantasy, and Hugo finalist. A small plaque also suggests you just buy the stupid book, everybody seems to be enjoying it, you can see for yourself right here, seriously. This is the LAST DAMN UPDATE I swear to God.
