One hour to go. Busy day in Avalon, Pa. (Allegheny County).

This poll worker is trying to avoid eating (more) leftover Halloween candy from a fellow worker.

As great as Yamamoto has been, I was still wondering if he'd run out of gas. Took guts to go to him in the 9th with runners on.

'We've been shortchanged': Hill District group blasts Penguins after team loses development rights to old Civic Arena site After nearly two decades sitting on exclusive rights to develop the Lower Hill District site that once housed the Civic Arena, the Pittsburgh Penguins have lost their stake, drawing derision for takin...

This has been frustrating for the community, but at least it's a fresh start.

Doesn't help that the owners involved in the development rights sold the team four years ago & Fenway Sports Group ignores the 'Burgh. Local politicos should have applied more pressure.

Jaromir Jagr, 53, plays pro game in Czechia, pushing back Hall of Fame candidacy another year The earliest that JΓ‘gr will now be eligible to clear the Hall of Fame's three-year waiting period for induction is 2029.

I love it. Jags has endured so long that I gave up my grudges against him for the way his Pens career ended *and* the fake out when we thought he was coming back.

Just a totally unique dude and physical freak.

Now, just waive the HOF waiting period and induct him.

I binged this podcast. It's really well-done and is a bit different from the standard sports-story series, especially from ESPN.

The series did an excellent job of telling the full life of a man, Martin Manley, you've almost certainly never known about.

Doing the Penguins 6.6K Run & Family Walk w/ my boys. (One is excited after enjoying the Kids Marathon last spring, but he's bummed about waking early on Sunday!)

A five-star review of "Prescription for Pain" from September 26, 2025 that reads:

A Masterclass in Investigative Journalism and Empathy

Philip Eil’s Prescription for Pain is a searing, meticulously researched deep dive into one of the most disturbing chapters of the opioid epidemic. With the precision of a surgeon and the heart of a poet, Eil unpacks the rise and ruin of Dr. Paul Volkmanβ€”a once-promising pediatrician turned β€œPill Mill Killer”—whose unchecked greed and delusions of grandeur devastated rural Ohio A.

What sets this book apart isn’t just the gripping narrative or the staggering scope of Eil’s decade-long reporting odyssey. It’s the ethical rigor. Eil refuses to flatten Volkman into a caricature of evil, instead allowing readers to witness the contradictions and complexities that fueled his descent. The result is a portrait that’s damning, yesβ€”but also deeply human B.

Eil’s writing is crisp, immersive, and unflinching. He centers the victims with care, devoting space to their stories and honoring their lives beyond the headlines. The afterword, a tribute to the 13 people who died under Volkman’s care, is a gut punch of quiet reverence A.

If you appreciated Dopesick, Empire of Pain, or Dreamland, this belongs on your shelf. It’s not just true crimeβ€”it’s truth with consequences. A profound achievement.

Reason #42,387 why kids rule:

Me: "After The Beatles broke up, Paul started a band that included his wife. It was called Wings."

8-year-old: "Did they sing about food?"

Thanks for doing what you can to care for the little one - especially after-hours! It's been years, but my wife has had luck with the Humane Animal Rescue League in the past. We used to donate, but I don't think we've gotten a solicitation in a while and they slipped our minds.

Good luck!

I sometimes feel guilty about taking out too many books and not taking/making enough time to read them.

But I'm all about community support for libraries - we have a great system in Allegheny County - and I'm happy to do whatever helps keep libraries funded for everybody to use.
