Note that this is a newish amendment to the Save America Act. The earlier version was plenty bad. But this is even worse. Curiously, I had a really hard time finding this latest version online. I knew to look only bc the Brennan Center alluded to an amendment along these lines.

The Potomac doesn’t run through the heart of Washington. The Potomac runs along the western border of the capital. The Anacostia River and Rock Creek both run through the heart of the city.

I believe flag-burning should be legal, precisely because we know that it’s intended to send a clearly understandable political message. Same with all violations of basic flag etiquette. This suit is obvious flag desecration.

Imagine someone burning a cloth that looks like a flag but has only 49 stars and 12 stripes. Would you be unsure as to the intended level of respect the act shows the flag & the USA? Of course not!

“But those white stars on blue and equal-width red and white stripes aren’t really a flag!” makes as much sense as “Those two vertical lines with a shorter horizontal between them isn’t really an H!” Obvious nonsense.

Folks, the traditional understanding of flag etiquette upon which the Flag Code is based holds that if it looks like a flag, it is a flag. Because a flag is a symbol, so if an observer understands it to represent the flag, it does.

the rise of the Macedonian empire was simply the result of stress-tested battlefield homosexuality evolving into new forms.

Based on Greek history, apparently fire beats marble, homosexuality beats fire, and Macedonian twinks beat homosexuality.

My theory of the moment: The extraordinary courage of ordinary people in places like Minneapolis is reawakening us to our social and economic ties to immigrants. It's making "love thy neighbor" cool again. That's the ultimate antidote to MAGA hate.

Thoughts on this:

Every one of these whines about “warriors” having to endure education and interaction with civilian agencies boils down to this: When you factor in politics, strategy, philosophy, ethics, outcomes, etc. there’s no way to conclude that indulging my impulses is always right and that makes me feel bad.

The specious argument for preserving elementary school cursive (“but how will people read old documents?”) applies here. How will people ever really understand classic American culture like the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday” if they don’t understand what lines like “brown LA haze” refer to?

Same. If Newsom is the Democratic nominee I will absolutely vote for him in the general election, but I’ll campaign hard against him in the primary if he runs, and I just don’t encounter any stronger pro-Newsom position here than that. The “pro-Newsom” consensus seems to be “fine, if I have to.”

The Epstein Class is the by-product of an economy that emerged over the last two decades, from which this new elite has siphoned off vast amounts of wealth.

U.S. added 130,000 jobs in January, but labor market growth stalled in 2025 The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that U.S. employers added 181,000 jobs last year, far fewer than the 1.46 million jobs that were added in 2024.

US had almost *no* job growth in 2025.

Hiring numbers were revised down by over a million jobs.

Largest annual revision in over 20 years.

Democrats should get behind a voter ID law that only goes into effect when 99.9% of the eligible population has a valid ID and automatically pauses when the number falls below that. The fact that Republicans would never accept this would make clear what the real point of voter ID laws is.

If I had a nickel for every time I trolled Sparta stans on the bird site by pointing out it was an unsustainable society based on slavery, pederasty, & fear of extrajudicial killings by secret police, I could have retired in 2018.

If you are wondering what words the all-male Congress found so "blasphemous" that they felt compelled to literally scrape them off the monument, they were: ''Woman, first denied a soul, then called mindless, now arisen, declared herself an entity to be reckoned.''

Flying George Washington’s headquarters flag for Presidents Day. Remember, the holiday doesn’t honor all presidents or even the office, it celebrates the births of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Going in to the tournament, I thought USA women were our best shot at curling gold. I still do. They’re curling smart and well and also getting very lucky. You’ve gotta be good and catch the breaks to win gold.

I’d let go accidentally with no turn and grabbed the handle before the hog line to give it the correct turn. I’d been practicing throwing with a lighter grip on the stone and went too far. That double touch was definitely advantageous! I don’t get why Canada is doing this.

On the one hand, rules are rules. On the other hand, as a longtime curler, I can’t think of a way touching the granite after release could help a throw. Just seems so odd to me. I was once cautioned about double-touching in club play. But I had legitimately let go of the stone before the hog line

Evil and not particularly successful. We valorize the supposed 300 Spartans at the final stand at Thermopylae, but somehow not the larger number of Thespians & Thebans who fought there. “Spartans were awesome” tells me you don’t know classical history at all.

A trivial thing I believe disproportionately strongly is that it’s morally and patriotically improper for American schools to use the athletic nickname Spartans as many here do. Classical Sparta was as close to a totalitarian society as any in ancient history. Just pure evil, and also not
