Unacceptable.

Pickup trucks and their drivers are killing children. The federal government must act on #CarBloat. We must prioritize children's lives

Red-light right turns: Ottawa councillor wants to ban them downtown Downtown drivers may get less leeway at red lights. A councillor is applying pressure after witnessing an accident steps from City Hall.

I witnessed the aftermath of a cyclist getting hit by a car turning right yesterday, just a couple of blocks from where Saloni Aitawadekar was killed while crossing the street near City Hall.

Itโ€™s time to seriously consider banning right turns on red in Ottawaโ€™s downtown core.

For parking alternatives look to Calgary, which has a transit free-fare corridor serving downtown businesses. Itโ€™s time Ottawa look to do the same for Richmond, Bank, Stitsville main. Offering more options to visit Main Street businesses is a win for all.

Donโ€™t stop short, Ottawa. Parking is massively subsidized in however you math it. This small externality revenue must be put to sustainable transportation, such as Transit and Bike Share, offering equitable transportation to all. 2/3

Great messaging from the City! This is a step in the right direction to reducing public subsidy of private property storage. 1/3

I am 100% ready to join you to โ€œban right on redโ€. Montreal has this, but only because thatโ€™s the way it always was. Other cities elected to allow right turns on red, to allow for greater traffic flow. And look whoโ€™s paying the price. Day after day, another tragedy. Make this an election issue.

Disagree. My McKellar street got sidewalks because my neighbours fought decades against people who staked their ownership of the street over the safe movement of the 200 school kids who use it every day (likely with the same argument). Iโ€™m glad they persisted and our neighbourhood is better for it.

And why does the community need this?

800k car trips are made every day in Ottawa. 80% of those trips are under 5km. If you want less traffic in your โ€™hood, then you want sidewalks and bike infrastructure everywhere.

Imagine sidewalks were always there and the city wanted to pull them out. Would the anti-sidewalkers cheer this on?

Probably not, but change is harder for some. I hope the city is able to convey why the community needs this in simple terms. And then get on with it.

We could have nice things too, all it takes is political will (and not just from the urban minority in Ottawa).

Whatโ€™s the best way to visit the tulip festival, you ask? By bike of course. You can walk your bike if itโ€™s not too busy. Alternatively there are plenty of bike rack throughout Commissioners Park, including these really cute ones at the dock (good for all types of bikes).
