Some seriously big energy at #KidicalMass from the #BikeHfx crew today! Today was a strong reminder that society undermines the strength of our kids. These kids WANT TO MOVE! But we limit them so aggressively through poor policy & design decisions. Grateful for the organizers & marshalls!

Carrying a weapon conveys power over others by threat of lethality.

Looking South on Denbury Ave is a new sidewalk and road, measuring 2m and 6m respectively. This sidewalk serves a neighbourhood campus of 1800 students.

Good news: In time for the school year, new sidewalks! Used by 100’s of Broadview and Nepean HS students daily. Kudos to planners for 2m sidewalks, 3m car lanes, reducing crosswalk distance and slowing down drivers.

Canada has a #StopDeKindermord history too, complete with stereotypical "sorry".

The difference between Canada and the Netherlands: we didn't see widespread change and action decades ago. We're still asking for it today.

Or rather, fines based on value of car. Easily implemented. Basic car = basic fine. Trophy car = big fine.

Imperfect as sometimes high income drive old Camrys, the over-leveraged drive vanity vehicles. But I suspect the former are not doing 50 over.

My point is the externalities, the cost that our choices impose on society. For driving its pollution, infra demand, road widenings, subsidized parking etc. If priced fairly far greater than the $1/km generally accepted.

Hence an unpopular take and an obstacle to making transit an equitable choice.

Integrated Speed Adaptation on all new cars, helping drivers adhere to speed limits.

There is no good reason to speed. Especially in urban environments.

A trip to a museum on transit for a family of 4 would cost $32. Driving and parking $6.

We need to flip the this, make the externality costs of the later pay for the former.

Side effects include: change in driver behaviour; reduction in pedestrian injuries and fatalities; reduction in energy consumption and emissions.

Red-light right turns: Ottawa councillor wants to ban them downtown Downtown drivers may get less leeway at red lights. A councillor is applying pressure after witnessing an accident steps from City Hall.

I witnessed the aftermath of a cyclist getting hit by a car turning right yesterday, just a couple of blocks from where Saloni Aitawadekar was killed while crossing the street near City Hall.

It’s time to seriously consider banning right turns on red in Ottawa’s downtown core.

For parking alternatives look to Calgary, which has a transit free-fare corridor serving downtown businesses. It’s time Ottawa look to do the same for Richmond, Bank, Stitsville main. Offering more options to visit Main Street businesses is a win for all.

Don’t stop short, Ottawa. Parking is massively subsidized in however you math it. This small externality revenue must be put to sustainable transportation, such as Transit and Bike Share, offering equitable transportation to all. 2/3
