This is so cool! The writing is interesting: I don't see the curvy block letters with almost serif-looking lines very often. Maybe something from its origins in Roman Spain or the 3rd century?

I'm preparing to begin a Classics MA program this next fall and am very interested in artifact conservation at the Getty Villa! What educational path did you take to get to where you are professionally? What opportunities are there for graduate students interested in this sort of work? Thank you!!

I was absolutely honored this weekend to be in the same room as the famous Pylos combate agate and other incredible bronze age artifacts. So so so incredible. Just amazing to spend time with this and see it up close. I'll have to share some of my other favorite things soon, too!

I just saw this in Milan the other weekend! The Duomo museum is fantastic, I highly recommend for anyone in the area.

I'm going on my first archaeological field school in a few days!! What are some things you were glad you brought or wished you brought on your first trip to do fieldwork? #archaeology #AncientBlueSky

I'm trying to save money over here but when something like this comes around and it's at my favorite museum?? I'm going to have to be there! Can't wait to see.

The Archaeological Institute of America (Toronto Society) and The Archaeology Centre welcome Lisa Trentin for a talk titled: "Bodies of Difference: Deformity and Disability in Roman Art and Archaeology." All welcome.

This is so cool! I have a soft spot for these pigment jars from Pompeii: they were the first thing I saw a few years ago when I went to Oklahoma City for an exhibit at the OKCMOA that really got me hooked on classics/archaeology.

Here's another artifact with writing, also from the Getty Villa. This pottery fragment has an Etruscan word, sutil, meaning 'for the grave'. Writing makes artifacts feel so personal and transports us back into the past in interesting ways. This word spoken by someone that long ago are with us still.

Check out this Greek vase at the Getty Villa. I'm so fascinated when art and artifacts meet writing. Labeled here for us is Hermes, but it has an interesting spelling and declension. Note the rough breathing for /h/, and the ending -Ξ·Ξ½ΞΏΟ‚: neither are expected when we're used to Attic forms.

To say that I am stressed and concerned about the state of higher education in the US right now is an understatement. I've been trying to distract myself by looking at fun things I've seen at museums, recalling happier times and new experiences. I'd like to share some here over the next few days.

Thank you for the recommendation! I appreciate you taking the time to share. This is what I'm looking for to read over the break.

This is exciting! Good timing, as I'm looking forward to taking a class on Cleopatra this spring semester and starting to read sources over the break. By chance and luck, in Latin poetry class, we'll be reading the Dido sections of the Aeneid. African queen semester!? The hype is real.

I might need to save up to travel to this one! Mary Beard's documentaries and books have been a constant favorite for years. Not just a brilliant scholar but an inspiration to me and my wife as we navigate academia.
