I thought each bite would bring me closer to some kind of desirable flavor or texture and when those continued to elude me it only grew funnier

Imagine: You have no groceries and it's 8pm and you're so hungry. The local Euro-style grocer is selling a premade sandwich of ham, havarti, mustard, and pickles on a pretzel roll. But the ham is flavorless rubber. The pickle is thin, watery. The bread is stale and unpretzeled. Mustard, nonexistent

I can only hope that rubbery ham and bread of dubious origin don't counteract the longevity-boosting effects of such good humor!
