Among his accomplishments was publishing The Alaska Herald, a bilingual English and Russian newspaper first published on March 1, 1868, a few months after the U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia.

In my research, I discovered that Honcharenko was the first individual recorded in the US Census as born in Ukraine, in 1880. The Ukrainian diaspora has long been fascinated with him, and in 1999 his former homestead became a California landmark, furthering his recognition among the American public.

Also, in this issue was an English translation of the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko’s The Caucasus.

The first article, Czarism, concluded, “The despotic, all-devouring and absorbing creed which we call Czarism is thus a simple result of time end of events…The question is: when will its knell be sounded? That blessed hour is not so distant as some suppose.”
