1/Kevin Hassett had long ago discredited himself as a scholar by parroting claims about the economy he knew to be false. Even so, parroting the lie about rigged statistics, is a new low. The academy should ostracize him the same way a fabricator of research should be ostracized.

The initial estimate of job change for a month is based on the growth or loss of jobs at the businesses that have reported their data. Generally, BLS assumes that the employment situation at businesses that had reported is representative of the situation at those that had not yet reported. BLS continues to collect outstanding reports from the
businesses in the sample as it prepares a second and then a third estimate for the month. With each subsequent estimate, more businesses have provided their information. In 2012, the average collection rate at the time of the third estimate for a month was 94.6 percent. (See chart 1.)

Why do the jobs numbers get revised?

our markets and policymakers want data NOW but employer data dribbles in over months

1st estimate is based on the 75% of employers who respond promptly

Updates occur as more data rolls in: 95% response rate by final revision 1/N

With government statistics, it's pretty simple. If you liked the February, March, and April numbers, then you have to accept all the next ones, too. They are produced in the exact same way, it's what the computer spits out, based on the inputs provided. You do not get to cherry pick your stats.

Dr. Erika McEntarfer has devoted her career to public service. She has conducted herself as BLS Commissioner with great integrity. There is no evidence whatsoever that BLS data are politically biased.

Don't mistake me, I wish we had that kind of academic solidarity.

But if you wanted it, you needed to stand up for your adjuncts and early career scholars ten years ago. You needed to stand up for humanities fields under siege fifteen years ago.

There's no solidarity to draw. You didn't build it.

Our institutions are not weak, feeble, cowardly things because of 'the republicans.' They are weak and cowardly because of us, because of the things we did not do, did not insist on, that we permitted, while we competed for status within academic fields and institutions we did nothing to sustain.

3/ In our paper, AI-Generated Production Networks (2024), joint with @trfetzer.com , @econopete.bsky.social and Bennet Feld, we used AI to build AIPNET, a detailed map of global production networks. It shows how critical inputs like Cement and Steel underpin industries worldwide

🚨 Tariffs on inputs = tax on downstream products.🚨

Here’s cement’s granular production network. A 50% duty on key inputs propagates costs through roads, buildings, data-centres, and renewable infrastructure.

Every time some working academic or software engineer argues β€œHey actually there are a lot of use-cases for these things, but it’s like a jumpy power tool you have to be real careful with”, some rich gobshite Mr Kool-Aids through the wall shouting β€œI’m getting it to invent new fundamental physics”.

The thing is, basically every flagship state public uni *is* an elite research uni, isn’t selective, but is chronically underfunded. We could fix that, but something tells me greedy narcissist like Andreessen are against that too
