This is a thing among some folks in Central and South America. I was light-heartedly taken to task by my host dad in Bolivia ca. 2002 for the US's somewhat oblivious use of "American" to refer to us alone when it's a word much of the hemisphere claims. That said, neither he nor I lost sleep over it.
