Does a forecast like this exist for Hawaii?

This is a VERY large earthquake, possibly/probably among the 10 largest ever recorded. A clear subduction zone megathrust event. And it is another M>8.5 event with a notable foreshock (the recent M7.4 in same location), like Tohoku in 2011.

Few things get under my skin like implications of not caring about people. Scientists, civil servants, emergency managers, and so many more are folks who prioritize serving the public. Like it's part of every single thing we do. We're not here for the clicks or the followers. We're here for people.

This is so frustrating because it almost certainly played no role in this specific disaster. However, over the long term, this is a problem. And the active and proposed budget cuts further imperil this work. But trying to separate the two is impossible.

Amazing how as a meteorologist I've (we've) gone from not being able to forecast anything to somehow controlling the weather in the span of a few months.

They are alerts that can be sent out via WEA whenever a police officers injured in the line of duty. They are sent out quite frequently in Texas according to what I’ve seen online and that is resulted in some people turning off WEA notifications.

Also… a way to turn off types of alerts rather than tiers. Some systems allow you to turn off amber alerts, but I’ve seen several posts about how in Texas blue alerts are a huge problem, but cannot be turned off individually.

To me this feels like a similar moment to Sandy Hook.

If republicans aren’t willing to accept responsibility and change policy to protect young white christian girls in Texas, they won’t do it for anyone.

Science institutions, scientists and science communicators still on Twitter …. not really sure how much more evidence you need to leave that awful place and stop giving it your time, content and knowledge which it uses as a commodity to build its evil house upon.

The time to leave was long ago.

Need more accounts like this to counter false narratives out there about warnings

we need to have a hard, serious conversation about the *profusion* of Amber, Silver, and Blue Alerts many people get, and how they may be pushing people to turn off vital emergency alerts on their devices entirely.

Another issue here is mismatch between public expectation & scientific reality re: what's possible in predicting localized convective extremes (i.e., severe/torrential t-storms). Days/environments supportive of such risk are predictable; exact timing/location/intensity of subsequent extremes is not.

All true:

- NOAA funding cuts prohibit the agency to run at full capacity
- Remaining NOAA employees doing exceptional / heroic work
- Extreme events happen; sometimes unexpectedly
- 20th century infrastructure is inadequate for today's climate
- Finger pointing as an event is ongoing? Shameful.

I’m sure there are communication issues, but the heavy emphasis on “this isn’t what the NWS said it would be” and “All of us started with and used this NWS forecast including the media” seems to indicate there may be an attempt to blame the NWS rather than limitations or an act of god.
