that's good to hear! i've been looking forward to it, but it's a busy time so I haven't gotten around to getting it yet

I need to see if I can find some of my old solutions to those problems. knowing how to tackle diophantine equations would likely come in handy for some AoC problems as well. But I'm afraid my project Euler stuff was like 2 laptops ago, so odds of finding it are slim.

that is so fun! once upon a time I used to be more of a SQL wizard when i worked for a university, but I haven't practiced those chops in some time now. this is such a great interface and set up for this. plus ducks are best. thanks for sharing! 🦆

I tried a few more optimizations like trying to find an upper bound on what the largest possible rectangle could be from each point, but for some reason I was reducing the search space too much and missing the correct answer. So I just searched every compressed point instead O(n^2)

I had a lot of wacky ideas that didn't pan out and finally it seems that coordinate compression is what got me there.

My logic counts the paths for part 2. The only problem is it's going to take more CPU cycles than I have left in my lifetime to finish counting them 😅

TFW you get the test input solution quickly on part 2 and you think "was this too easy?" and then you try against the real input and see several seconds and it's still crunching...

Day 10 part 1 was a little sneaky, but the trick hit me pretty soon after I first tried to find the solution the hard way. Now part 2... I have some depthy ideas, but I wasn't able to get around to implementing them quite yet. We'll see what tomorrow has in store

Welp, day 9 has defeated me. The rectangles win. Part 1 was so decetively easy... I'm trying to be #chill about it and not let my frustration get the best of me, but when I close my eyes, I just see the rectangles taunting me.

so, it seems to me that when you check if the next range's min is less than the current range's max, you don't check if the next max is actually greater than the current max, meaning you could end up shrinking the range instead of growing it. if a range is wholly inside another one...

I used to feel that way as well. But I think after enough fiddling they become second nature. I almost even felt "comfortable" with is this year!

Maybe next year you can at least get to a "don't hate" feeling with them 😅
