As a consumer I liked UV (in part because it had no region restrictions) but from a technical perspective it was a bit of a mess (which also had a consumer benefit at times). MA is a solid alternative, but not having all studios is a hinderance. Also, never paying full price for things I don't own.

Ultraviolet was never a concern. It was Game of Thrones and a desire to have a global library that pushed Netflix into TV and movie production. HBO was seen as a company that could get there first. HBO already had HBO Go at the time and would launch HBO Now soon after.

It was when House of Cards launched. Studios were pulling back content from Netflix and HBO was creating prestige shows.

I remember when Reed said he wanted Netflix to become HBO before HBO became Netflix. HBO was seen as Netflix’s biggest competitor just over a decade ago.

You can do this today, at no cost, as long as you don't need to keep the number. That's an easy path any bad actor is likely to follow. Plus, even w/o that phone tie, there are still tower logs that tie the IMEI to a series of locations.
