I was pretty taken aback at the level of ignorance that’s played out in the just-host-it-yourself debate. A little sad to see it is still alive and well.

I suppose it’s natural as the developer population grows larger, but what a reminder that the % of the technical population that has even a rudimentary understanding of what it takes to build and operate a large platform is dwindling

Sure. They’ve got the lead in batteries and solar as well now. I’ve not run the numbers, nor do I have the expertise to do so, but I guess my questions are (1) can we obtain the social license to spend that sort of money (2) are we not better off investing that same money in renewables and batteries

Look at Australian politics. That’s because it’s a stalking horse, a fairytale to distract whilst the status quo continues on.

I hope that one (really, several) of the microreactor companies make it work, but it’s an enormously hard engineering challenge, as is building conventional (non-micro) nuclear, given that we have lost the expertise that gave us our existing fleets.

That’s harsh… but I’m not sure I disagree. That said, my experience with Australian politics is that nuclear is a stalking horse for the status quo - lol net zero, keep polluting - they know it’s a fairytale without an unpalatable level of investment and accompanying enormous market intervention.
