Come to the Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm this Friday if you want to hear a story that starts in Patagonia and ends in a beer bottle!
09.02.2026 14:59 β π 15 π 9 π¬ 0 π 0What do wild microbes and the taste of beer have in common? Next Friday you can listen to Prof. Rike Stelkens at The Nobel Prize Museum talking about the role of yeast in evolution & taste locally brewed beer. @stelkens.bsky.social @kawresearch.bsky.social

How do populations maintain an evolutionary memory? I am happy to share that our work with Dmitri Petrov @petrovadmitri.bsky.social, Paul Schmidt, and colleagues on dominance reversal and stabilization of insecticide resistance in changing environments over time is now published at Nature EE.
15.09.2025 18:17 β π 53 π 19 π¬ 3 π 0Wild yeasts live in the forests all around us. Yet, little is known about the role they play in ecosystems. They can be used to develop new #beer and bread flavors, but can also serve as a unique model for studying #climatechange

We are particularly happy to see this paper out. It has been in the making for a long time and was a large collaborative effort between postdocs, Phd students, and great colleagues in Gothenburg! @chloehbk.bsky.social @ciarangilchrist.bsky.social
18.09.2025 08:56 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Crosses between divergent-selected lines produced hybrids with reduced gamete viability and striking genome instability (lots more SVs), while parallel-selected lines remained largely compatible. This links ecological selection to the emergence of βintrinsicβ genetic barriers.
18.09.2025 08:56 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We evolved yeast for 1000 generations in divergent and in parallel environments. At regular time points during experimental evolution, we made crosses within and between environments, and show that adaptation to different βecological nichesβ can generate partial reproductive isolation.
