New today: We're petitioning NSF to revert GRFP eligibility criteria to last year's terms, to avoid pulling the rug out from under the earliest of early-career scientists who had every reason to think they'd be able to apply this year. Sign and spread the word!

USDA funding delays under Trump compromise agricultural research Sharp drop in grant awards leaves researchers frustrated

"With 2 weeks left before the end of this fiscal year, USDAโ€™s [NIFA] had awarded just 558 competitive grants ... 68% fewer than during the prior fiscal yearโ€”and $741 million less in competitively awarded research funds"

Don't forget #PlantSci and ag research, folks.

Genomics hivemind: I want to genotype a bunch of diverse, heterozygous diploids with a messy genome (๐ŸŒฝ -- who'd have guessed?) but I care about phase. Computational phasing doesn't really cut it, so wondering what the cheapest alternatives are -- nanopore to 10-20X? Linked shortreads?

What a delight to see a cool paper in a fancy journal, then realize you know the lead author from back when. Meaghan was the lab manager in the @phohenlohe.bsky.social lab while I was there. Thanks for sharing, Marty!

AI, peer review and the human activity of science When researchers cede their scientific judgement to machines, we lose something important.

A few months ago, Nature published how-to guide for using ChatGPT to write your peer reviews in 30 minutes.

This is, of course, a horrible idea. Hereโ€™s my response with @jbakcoleman.bsky.social .

Such a mega hit of advisor joy, had to share. Frankie (right) has worked on lots of different aspects of tamarisk beetle genetics since our 2021 GEP @genomicsed.bsky.social course. Here she is teaching Jake, my first summer research intern, how to isolate RNA for his genome annotation project.

'Where's our money?' CDC grant funding is moving so slowly layoffs are happening The state and local health departments that rely on CDC funding say the money is not coming in on time and no one can tell them why. Some are laying off staff.

"If they can delay until the end of September, then that's it," the staffer adds. "Those projects are not going to happen. That money goes straight back to Treasury."

That's why both CDC staffers who spoke with NPR say this amounts to impounding the agency's funding.

Unsolicited listicle: My list of the most criminally underused/underappreciated phylogenetic comparative methods. Note, I am not involved in ANY of these methods; but I see them as things people are often asking of comparative data but have been surprised at how infrequently they have been cited.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Comments can be short. Courts consider themโ€”and scientists with NSF/NIH experience are especially impactful

Racist and sexist roots in the cancellation of NSF grants under Trump:

Grants with female PIs canceled 2x more than men
Grants with Black PIs canceled 4x over White PIs
Grants with Hispanic PIs canceled 2x over White PIs
Grants with PIs with disabilities canceled 2x more than without

Just one example: In the past 2 weeks, NIH has terminated dozens of programs to support students pursuing scientific careers. These MARC or U-RISE (T34) grants provide rising undergraduates with opportunities and stipends to participate in science. Where are these programs? Not in the Ivy league:
