it's been too long since I've been able to challenge myself with a real, complex problem like this

it's been too long since I've had to think my way around structural recursion.

so now I need to understand how to maintain something like an execution context, where I can effectively do the equivalent of yield()ing from a coroutine, and pick up that state exactly where I left it the next time my interpreter runs

this kind of thinking is...incredibly satisfying for me

if there is one VERY VERY UNDERAPPRECIATED concept in programming theory, it's structural recursion and thinking your way around a complex recursive data structure

so I guess in addition to a compiler, I also need an interpreter that understands coroutines and loops and has a call stack?

honestly, getting the intermediate representation right by trial and error is probably the best way to avoid a lot of extra overhead in maintaining a grammar, lexer, parser, and so on for a frontend

for real, though, I'm coming to understand why things were done this way and why it's...almost addictively powerful how expressive that is

especially since I don't know what the full specification of the language I'm building is going to be yet or what will / won't work!
