The RIFs have begun.

Three key points:
1) The admin has been planning mass firings to begin in October since February
2) The work necessary to carry out mass firings is illegal during a shutdown, violating the Antideficiency Act, which carries a criminal penalty
3) This harms America, ridding us of talent and expertise

UPDATE: Newsom has signed SB 79 into law!!
This is a great day for anyone who cares about ending California's housing and homelessness crisis, getting the state to net zero emissions, and recovering American democracy.

There was never going to be a moment when everyone—everyone in government, everyone in media, everyone in the population—was roused to action at the same time. We're turning a battleship. And Pritzker understands that.

As a protest optics nerd love about the inflatables is how much they visually disrupt and pull focus from the fascist shock imagery Noem & Miller are trying to create.
So many of these photos now look like the world's silliest dance party, backgrounded by a bunch of guys in uniform looking awkward

Right now, we are at Phase 1 of a mass movement. This means building strength, winning hearts and minds, and making room for people that have never been active to wander in and participate.
The optics matter! Friendly protests are good!

Mysterious boxwork terrain on Mars.
"Curiosity is in the midst of the boxwork campaign, trying to decipher why we see such pronounced ridges & hollows in this area of Mount Sharp."

"Looking for a spot to go rock climbing 🧗♂️?
I've got just the thing for you: admire these stunning cliffs on Mars photographed by the Curiosity rover. The one in the center is ~39m high, and with Martian gravity being low (1/3 of Earth's), it'll be easier to climb!"

The Fog (1980)
Watched The Fog (1980) tonight, and on this viewing it jumped out at me to wonder if one the origins of this project was Carpenter's disgust with all the Bicentennial hoopla and wanting to make something explicitly about how America's historical charm is founded on historical violence.

This pic covers about a tenth of one degree square. The full moon—which is actually far smaller to our eyes than a dime held at arms length—is about half a degree wide, covering more than 20x that much of the cosmos at any given time.
It is recommended to expand and zoom the image, for max 😍😱🫣✨

Nor that I have any illusions about passing with it into posterity
because I know the people will one day tear it down.
Nor that I wished to erect to myself in life
the monument you’ll not erect to me in death:
I put up this statue just because I know you’ll hate it.

Credit where credit is due. The Democrats' message that the GOP shut down the government because they want to throw millions of people off healthcare has broken through. Two of my cousins who are NOT AT ALL tuned into national politics told me that this is why the government is shut down.

If I had listened to the cynics, Calgary wouldn't have bike lanes, or a new library, or East Village, RiverWalk, the Peace Bridge, downtown office conversions, or even community gardens. My advice? Use the well-being of future generations as a guide and march confidently passed the naysayers.

This is a nice thread about The Onion. Thank you for saying nice things, and I can confirm the premise: If you pay your staff well, and you allow them to do what they're great at, it works better than chasing algorithms. The art is better, the truth is found easier, and—bonus!—the revenue is better.
