It's game day! I'm going to trap my players in a semi-abandoned mine full of monsters! Ummm. Their characters - I'm going to trap their CHARACTERS in a mine.

Justice for the โ€˜foremother of the reparations movementโ€™ - Harvard Law School Advocates at Harvard Law School and Harvard Kennedy School lead an effort to obtain a presidential posthumous pardon for Callie House, a formerly enslaved woman and early civil rights hero.

Question for #skystorians:

I'm teaching my students about Callie House (link below), and her efforts to force the government to disburse the $68 million collected as cotton taxes between 1862 and 1868 but never added to the Treasury. How would I check to see if the money still existed?

Hey, I know that store! (I worked at the flagship in Elmira, and at the first expansion in Ithaca, for many many years.)

Also, I've played the game, and it really evokes the films. Very tense, with a strong sense of peril. It's not one I own, so I can't offer to run it for you.

Congratulations, Glendon! Thank you for this art share and all you do for the community here.
My name is Mike. I work with traditional media, usually creating art with fantastical themes.

Curling is PERFECT for the unathletic - you don't need to be an athlete to play. The big bonspiels in Canada used to be sponsored by beer and cigarette companies.

I've tried it once, it's lots of fun, I'd do it again.

Redirecting...

I stand with County Executive Calvin Ball as he signs emergency legislation today prohibiting privately owned buildings from being used as ICE detention centers.

Howard County chose dignity, accountability, and its people. Tune into our event now:

Daffodil would like you to know that @ltimonin.bsky.social and I abandoned her with the children, who beat her with sticks and then murdered her with the vacuum cleaner, and now she is dead in the bedroom where no one pats her or pays any attention to her at all.

Joe Wheeler - who had led cavalry troops for the so-called confederacy during the Civil War - was appointed Major General over the volunteer cavalry during the Spanish-American War. At the battle of Las Guasimas, he encouraged his troops by saying "We've got the Damn Yankees on the run again!"

Things I'd change - more workers, yes. More pay, obviously. Training for voters. Changes to the definitions of "electioneering" under NY law. (I'm legally not allowed to ask voters to remove their MAGA hats in a polling site.) Open primaries. Election day voter registration. More mail ballots. 4/4

Non-boring elections recently - the 2020 election wasn't boring. The 2023 school board election locally wasn't boring. And the municipal election last November - we got a non-credible bomb threat. That wasn't boring.

It is a LONG shift - for a general election we start at 5am and finish up around 10pm. It's not, mostly, a physically demanding job; lots of standing and sitting and talking. It can be boring. Ideally it's boring. Non-boring elections are hectic. 2/4

Good thread. In New York, folks should know that poll workers are not volunteers, we get paid to be there. I dream of a time where there are enough people interested in working the election that my boss says "hey, you want to work a half day instead of the whole thing?" 1/4

As always, the answer to "what should I do if I'm worried about Rs loudly announcing their aspirations to try & ratfuck elections?" is go volunteer to be a poll worker or an elections observer. That is, if you actually want to so something beyond just wallowing in despair & untreated anxiety online

I was going to do this, but as I started listing classes it became clear that I was super focused - no really fun classes, just History and English and then more History.

I did sit in on the first session of an economics class by accident, and I did take a class in linguistics taught by a blind guy

Man, I feel you. I've been doing the adjunct thing for more than 20 years, and it doesn't ever really get easier or less irritating. BUT, if you love teaching, and you can cover your expenses in other ways, it's not a terrible gig.
