One of the worst gigs (any type) I've ever sat through was at UCC, when a clearly uninterested Maxwell kept telling the crowd that he didn't have to make any effort for us because we were students (this "gag" was used about five times in an hour). I'd nearly feel sorry for them

When I talk to people about the generational shift in the Irish language, how Irish people of my age came to embrace our linguistic heritage in a way that our parents typically didn't, Manchán's name is the first in my mouth. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann

In that we wouldn't have an arbitrary age barrier that has nothing to justify it, yes, for sure! As for whether it would have resulted in extra prospective candidates who would have added gravitas to proceedings… no idea :-) But presumably not worse than the exploding clown car we've witnessed.

I don't disagree, but that's not what I'm asking. In this race alone, plenty of unsuitable potential candidates have been prevented from reaching the ballot paper despite clearing the age bar, though the process still looked like a farce at times. Would it really have been any less dignified?

Is there anyone who voted against lowering the age bar for Presidential candidates in 2015 who can honestly say, hand on heart, that they believe the subsequent contests have been more dignified because of continuing the exclusion of under-35s? #spéirghorm #Áras25

Incidentally, my experiences with Icelandair continue to make me miss having Aer Lingus as my residence's flag-carrier. (Real ones will understand the gravity of this statement)

En route to #APSA2025, with a flight time almost exactly matching the time difference from Iceland, so if I get any sleep on this flight it just counts as a 45-minute nap. That's how it works, right?

Trans people have been around your whole life. You’ve been sharing bathrooms with them your whole life. They’ve been in your communities your whole life. They’ve even been playing sport your whole life.
And you didn’t care *at all* till a few years ago when every right wing org decided you should

Elements of both, I think. On the latter, I think it's a mix of cynicism about "normal" electoral politics and naivety about how the Presidency and its election work. I can see how "thought leader" types might be attracted to it when they wouldn't seek a parliamentary (or council) role in a blue fit

Blair's government had plenty of authoritarianism too but it took them years to reach these heights (though arguably the seeds of what we're seeing now were planted then). Starmer is charting a course straight to sunlit uplands for Reform and precious few else
