I believe one of the new mRNA vaccines was expected to treat colon cancer, and another had the potential to keep pancreatic cancer from recurring. That’s what they’re taking away.

Economist Amartya Sen won a Nobel in part for asking: Why did India avoid the mass famines that killed tens of millions in China? His answer: a free press. Journalists could expose suffering and shame governments into action. Silence and avoidance, by contrast, can be deadly.

Dersh has been banging this drum since Trump1 & the really good news is: ostracism works, even on the shameless.

Tons of people miss this--the shameless are hyper-sensitive to stigma.

Civil society should use this free, non-violent tool to punish destructive people a lot more often. It works.

Smithsonian removes Trump from impeachment exhibit in American History Museum A temporary placard, on display since 2021, described the president's historic impeachments. Officials said the exhibit was restored to an earlier version following a review of legacy content.

Exclusive: The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History removed references to President Trump’s two impeachments from an exhibit — an apparent change to its plans to update its collection of artifacts about the historic U.S. proceedings.

It is pretty noticeable that even as mainstream opinion on Israel and Gaza finally shifts, you don’t hear the Responsible Adults apologizing for punishing all the college kids protesting the atrocities. Quite the opposite in fact!

The First Planned Migration of an Entire Country Is Underway The Pacific island nation of Tuvalu could be submerged in 25 years due to rising sea levels, so a plan is being implemented to relocate its population to Australia.

The first planned migration of an entire country due to climate change is happening! Tuvalu, a Pacific island nation, is at risk of being submerged under rising sea level, so it has signed an agreement with Australia to allow 280 Tuvaluans to settle in Australia as permanent residents each year.

Most of the internet used to be like this. This is actually the default, it took companies enclosing the internet and adding weird, soul-killing incentives to make people behave the way they do now. In a way, there is truly nothing special about Wikipedia except that it survived longer.

France has spent the better part of six months lobbying Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, Lithuania, Canada, Italy, and Japan, among others, to announce recognition of Palestine at the same time as France. It seems Macron has decided that he will go for it himself and let others follow.

Apropos of nothing (a terrible panel discussion), there’s a lot of space between 1) acknowledging and being critical of some of the contradictions, excesses and pitfalls of identity politics and 2) supporting reactionary politics or art. 1 doesn’t lead to 2.

What's the best book to understand how European far-right parties grow grassroots support? I'm interested in their bottom-up tactics – reaching out to local community groups, organising meetings, that kind of thing – not ideological or media analysis.
