The White House and Mexico Are Learning to Get Along
The two have agreed to cooperate closely on the most politically sensitive issue, writes Alex González Ormerod.
The security tightrope @claudiasheinbaum.bsky.social is walking isn’t about balancing Trump’s demands on one side and Mexico’s needs on the other. It is about shared interests being thrown by politicking back in Washington and Mexico City

The dictatorship of political parties in Mexico
The Mexican political system is set up to protect its many political parties over all else.
After a single person dictatorship, and one-party rule, Mexico has the third worst form of government.
As president Sheinbaum mulls an electoral reform, now’s a good time to remember how terrible—and unreformable—Mexico’s political system is.

Sheinbaum really needs her party to shut up
MXPE Weekly Essentials ft. import backdoor busted, diminishing returns in investments, and other highlights in Mexican politics, policy, and markets from the past week.
Mexico is on the verge of striking a big deal with the Trump admin. So president Sheinbaum must have been pulling out her hair last week as her party went up in a blaze of anti-US rhetoric. Here’s why everything got so out of hand:

Mexico’s judicial election: The campaign
Novice judges and useless politicians force civil society to prepare for Mexico’s most controversial election.
Candidates are so unqualified to campaign that by the time a consultant contacted them, many had already been scammed.
This is what the lead up to Mexico’s judicial election has looked like for voters, candidates, and politicians:

Trump’s remittance tax won’t make any money
It will be a bonanza for the cartels though.
For centuries governments have taxed those they consider to be second-class citizens. For just as long, the taxed have found ways to avoid paying. Republicans are in for a rude awakening

A breakdown of Plan México, Sheinbaum’s flagship economic policy
The state of every sector Mexico is seeking to super-charge.
You can't build an economy in your own image without breaking a few taboos. Mexico is going all out and is about to remake (or break) its entire economic system. Here's a breakdown of each of the major sectors president Sheinbaum is already revolutionising

Timid quick-fixes paved the road to hell in Mexico
Genuine progress requires bold action, not piecemeal policy.
When the government saw an amazing community run environmental project and tried its own quick and dirty fix. It was a disaster. There’s another way

Donald Trump has reposted an anti-fentanyl video produced by the Mexican government. Though well intentioned (and a relational coup for Mexico), hyperbolic warnings about drugs can actually be very counterproductive. Here’s why:

Claudia Sheinbaum is losing control
The Mexican president’s support is not as solid as it seems.
@mexicope.bsky.social wasn’t originally going to cover the horrors discovered in Teuchitlán—tragically, none of this was new. That was, until the government opened its mouth.

Anti-drug ads are not why Mexico has fewer addicts
The campaigns actually make drug abuse worse and distract from the real, tough solutions.
Despite their love-in over anti-fentanyl ads, Trump and Sheinbaum are dead wrong about what makes a society less likely to take drugs.
The opposite is true; ads can make things worse and make tough decisions around drug policy harder.
