Makes it hard, though, if, anytime after first thing in the morning, you want something collected on the day.
27.12.2025 15:17 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is what seems to have happened to most postboxes: Itβs rare now to see ones that donβt have posted βlast collection timesβ of 9am (M-F) and 7am (Sa). Which doesnβt mean theyβre all emptied at that time on the dot, but theyβre saying it wonβt be earlier.
27.12.2025 15:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0View of the Asturias regional archives in Oviedo, Spain, housed in an old panopticon prison.
Having spent a lot of quality time at the AGN in Mexico City, I was excited to discover on a (touristic, non-research) visit to Oviedo, Spain, that the regional authorities of Asturias had the same idea of turning their panopticon prison into an archive.
23.12.2025 13:09 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Have been looking forward to catching up on this session.
15.12.2025 18:26 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0But he was βheavily engaged with The University of Missouri Tigers football and basketball teamsβ during his one year at Mizzou! Shouldnβt that count for something??
15.12.2025 12:10 β π 12 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0British nationality law has all sorts of post-imperial complexities, but the principle that (pretty much) anyone born in the UK before 1983 was a citizen from birth is straightforward enough!
13.12.2025 08:23 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That had been the de facto position as a result of legislation culminating in the Immigration Act 1971, which introduced the concept of βright of abodeβ in the UK, subjecting British passport holders without a direct link to the metropolis to immigration control. The BNA 1981 codified that.
13.12.2025 08:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Not relevant in this case: Itβs not quite right that all βUK & Coloniesβ citizens were unaffected by the BNA 1981. Only those with a connection to the *UK* (eg, by birth there) remained full British citizens. Those connected to colonies received lesser status (not including the right to live in π¬π§).
13.12.2025 08:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I think it would probably just be a matter of making an application for a British passport, with the birth certificate (and whatever else the forms ask for) as supporting documentation/proof of citizenship.
12.12.2025 19:50 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This ceased to be the case from 1/1/1983, when the British Nationality Act 1981 went into effect, limiting birthright citizenship to those born in the UK to a British citizen or βsettledβ parent (with βsettledβ meaning βgranted permanent residenceβ). But that didnβt affect those born before 1983.
12.12.2025 19:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Seems it should be pretty straightforward (unless there are some unusual circumstances)? The British Nationality Act 1948 (then in effect) provided for birthright citizenship for all born in the βUK and Coloniesβ, unless the father was a foreign diplomat or a part of an enemy occupying force.
12.12.2025 19:16 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0I think Curacao also supplies most of the players for the βDutchβ baseball team when itβs in international competitions!
06.12.2025 16:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Since the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved as an entity, Curacao has been a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands (alongside the Netherlands, Aruba & St Maarten). Itβs some of the smaller Dutch Caribbean islands (Bonaire, Saba & St Eustatius) that are βspecial municipalitiesβ.
06.12.2025 16:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Reading his press release, the renunciation he is talking about is the bit within the US oath of allegiance in which new citizens renounce allegiance to any foreign state β but that generally doesnβt affect whether a country of origin continues to regard the person as still being their citizen, too.
04.12.2025 20:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Well, yes, who *actually* does the bulk of the teaching at a place like Harvard?
04.12.2025 19:50 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβve written a piece on the curious lack of media and political interest in the issues faced by our national @britishlibrary.bsky.social. This is strange given we live in a world where ideas, knowledge and research are a long-term source of innovation and insight

30.10.2025 01:19 β π 2734 π 581 π¬ 36 π 64Another change: EU students donβt feature in the numbers before 2021 (as they didnβt need visas) but do now. So the data doesnβt show how many EU graduates of UK unis used to stay vs leave. Theyβll be in the stats now, but of course there arenβt so many of them post-Brexit.
01.11.2025 07:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Changes in the make up of the intβl student population will reflect all sorts of things: recent aggressive/successful recruitment efforts by UK unis and their agents in India, Pakistan, & Nigeria; economic conditions in source countries; policies in other intβl education destination countries; etc.
01.11.2025 07:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There will also have been changes in the make up by nationality of the intβl student population 15 years ago vs today. This likely makes a difference in these figures, as a higher proportion of students from some countries (eg, India) stay on post-degree than those from others (eg, China).
01.11.2025 07:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Would be interesting to break down percentage of those on βother work visasβ by those on the Health and Care route vs the main Skilled Worker route. The availability now of the former may partly account for why that βother workβ category is higher than in the past.
31.10.2025 12:08 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Also interesting: proportion on grad visas 2-3 years out is much higher than percentage on work visas back in the era of the Tier 1 (Post-Study Work) visa, which was similar to the current Graduate visa. Its elimination ca 2011 must account for the drop in the work visa percentage at that point.
