. @phoebeweston.bsky.social has reported on how Switzerland cleaned up its water by switching to treating sewage 3 times (tertiary treatment) before discharging it. That's enough to remove all pathogens, medicines + most chemicals.

Even if sewage is treated twice, as in English towns and cities, a lot of those meds + bacteria survive the treatment. Essentially, we're discharging meds, antibiotics, cleaning products + bacteria all together into rivers - perfect conditions for antimicrobial resistance to develop.

Research by @aprilhayes.bsky.social indicates bacteria exposed to antibiotics alongside a mix of other meds, were more likely to develop antibiotic resistant traits.

That's bad news because that's often what happens in sewage.
