We went to the San Jose protest yesterday. I was puzzled by a skull & crossbones pirate flag, with a straw hat. Turns out to be this manga series/protest flag:

The following Sept., we spent two weeks at TelStra hq in Melbourne. Mike went with me this time. We had a large corner room on the 19th floor of what was then the Hilton on the Park. The park being the Melbourne Cricket Ground, site of the 1956 summer olympics.

One of our joint clients was TelStra, AKA Telecom Australia. I and another developer and my boss, and his boss, went down under in Jan. 94. We split time between the TelStra office in Sydney and NorTel labs at the University of Wollongong.

In the mid-90s, I worked for a small software company, developing a rules-based program for provisioning centrex office phone switches. The switches were made by NorTel, so we had a cooperative arrangement with them.

I was excited to see Orioles trending, but apparently it's just a sportsball thing, not the birds.

When asked what it was doing there, the student insisted it was a '1'. When I pointed out that it was not, they looked at the keyboard and said that they were taught to type on a typewriter without a '1', using the 'l' instead.

As a student assistant in the computer lab at school, I would occasionally help struggling students debug their code, so they wouldn't tie up a terminal for hours. One day while helping an older student, I found an uninitialized variable 'l' being added to another variable.
