It is actually peak absurdity that we still have people arguing that voters should bend to the positions of their political representatives instead of the other way around.

AOC: We should be clear about who Charlie Kirk was. A man who believed that the civil rights act that granted black Americans the right to vote was a mistake… His rhetoric and beliefs were ignorant, uneducated, and sought to disenfranchise millions of Americans.

I would love to be part of the conversation on MSNBC related to the Kimmel story and it's chilling effects on first amendment, but unfortunately I was terminated by MSNBC for stating that "hateful thoughts lead to hateful words which lead to hateful actions".

Right, so for the framework of Trump alienating ppl who would otherwise vote for opps (which makes sense) it would have to explain how Trump performed relative to Rs in different demographics, how Trump DIDN'T alienate Slotkin/Baldwin/etc voters (good Ds? but that would mean Harris was meh/bad), etc

Jews were then a tiny percentage of the population of the United States–something like 2,500 souls out of almost 4 million. But Washington wanted to emphasize that the members of this small and previously persecuted minority were entitled, here in the United States, to the same rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as everyone else.

Two hundred and thirty five years later, there is in this nation a minority group whose rights are under severe attack: transgender individuals. We have a presidential administration which seeks to curtail those individuals’ rights. We have a powerful political movement that wishes to make them afraid.

This is wrong. It’s also un-American. Other Americans don’t have to understand or sympathize with transgender individuals. But we ought to defend their basic human rights. We ought to do so out of a simple sense of justice. But we also ought to do so out of a sense of pride that our nation exemplifies an β€œenlarged and liberal policy” for mankind, and that here β€œthere shall be none to make him afraid.”

One could call that American greatness.

"Bill Kristol quotes George Washington's condemnation of 18th century antisemitism to defend transgender people from scapegoating following the assassination of Charlie Kirk" is an actual sentence

While I would like to believe Trump was a bad candidate that people weren't really excited about, the fact that he overperformed compared to the average Republican doesn't really support that imo

Sorry, poor phrasing. I mean to say that Rosen and Baldwin getting reelected in states Trump won (plus Gallego + Slotkin winning, and a tight House margin) might suggest that the anti-incumbent bias was not as strong in 2024 as it appears based on just the Presidential Election results?

If this were the case, wouldn't we expect to see this in down ballot races? Dem senators winning most of the swing states in 2024 doesn't seem likely in this scenario

Charlie Kirk was a 2020 election denier and conspiracy spreader. But he was a 2020 election denier and conspiracy spreader in the right way.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk makes we worry we can no longer have peaceful discussions of whether gays should be stoned to death or civil and collegial debates about whether black people are inherently inferior. Our culture will suffer.

Ezra-

Your piece on the death of Charlie Kirk was reckless, insulting, condescending, and worst of all, a piece of hagiography. For someone who claims to honor history and context in your work, it reads as if it was written by someone who respects neither of those things.Β

What does it mean to practice politics in the "right way"? For whom does a "taste for disagreement" benefit? Certainly not the vulnerable populationsβ€”trans people, Black women, and moreβ€”who Kirk routinely targeted with hate speech and calls for violence.Β

When I was a college intern at NBC News Washington in 2008, I would watch your MSNBC appearances on the monitor in our office. At that point I could only dream of having a platform like yours, which has grown exponentially since then. Now that I have a platform (albeit it much, much smaller than yours) and I couldn't fathom using it to gaslight the country into believing a hateful man stood for a public good. Maybe it's time to consider how you're using yours.Β

Political violence disproportionately hurts people with less power, not people with more power. Political violence will disproportionately hurt people of color and women and LGBTQ people. It’s not fair, but that’s the way it works. Celebrating political violence means at best indifference to that.

Demand the Head of RFK A (maybe) winnable ask for a budget compromise

I think Ds should ask for the firing of RFK in the budget negotiations. It's a big, easily understandable ask, which would massively benefit the American ppl, and I think it would split the gop, many of whom want rfk gone anyway. www.everythingishorrible.net/p/demand-the...
