Twisted, one-sided commentary. Canadian (the human kind, not the emotional support animal kind).

Climbing a flight of stairs when I had long COVID didn't feel like climbing a flight of stairs when I was very tired but otherwise healthy, or even like climbing a flight of stairs when I had the flu. It felt like climbing a flight of stairs with a 50lb weight strapped to each limb.

Before long COVID, "fatigue" meant "I'm tired and sluggish. Getting through the day takes more energy than usual. I'll push through, put off tasks that aren't time-sensitive, and then rest."

During long COVID, fatigue meant "should I climb stairs or take a shower today, because I can't do both?"

"Yet the name of the disease makes it sound no more serious than tiredness or burnoutβ€”nothing a good rest wouldn’t fix. This may sound like a trivial complaint..."

It might have sounded like a trivial complaint to me before I experienced fatigue from long COVID. It no longer does.

I don't have strong feelings about bars opening before sunrise tomorrow (in multiple provinces) but I am very curious about the divide between "woke up early to watch the game and drink" and "stayed up all night to watch the game and drink"

I'll admit "Have your daughter provide you with the land" is at least different from the usual secret of "Have your parents provide the downpayment."

I've met a lot of tankies too, so my baseline for them is pretty low. And yet!

I guess I shouldn't be *shocked* that "it's wrong for the US to execute serial killers but it's fine for Venezuela to execute capitalists" is a political position that is held by actual human people, but I confess that here I am

Some personal news. Yesterday, I was part of a group that made history: I participated in a Teams meeting that involved breakout rooms, and it was not a complete disaster

I like how Canada needs to have a draft from which Americans such as himself are presumably exempt by virtue of 1) being too old, and 2) doing the equally-important job of writing words about fascism

Yes, and if this is an American culture war, well, they started it? So many of our DEI materials were created by and for Americans. The ones about anti-Black racism in particular are geared at a country whose Black population 15% of the total and largely descended from slaves. Not the case in Canada

macleans.ca/longforms/th... Macleans covered this story three months ago, and went deeper, but got almost traction on here for its report. This, from Professor Jeffrey Sachs, is a good analogy and some useful context:

Nearly every casual conversation with my colleagues eventually turns to AI and ends with a fiftysomething faculty member saying "well, fortunately I won't be around to see where this ends up". Morale is...not great

(This is where I tell the story about the ultimatum I gave my mom when I was 3 and really wanted to go to the park, right that second: "Either take me to the park now, or don't take me at all." I was surprised that she went for Option B. Again, in my defence, I was 3.)
