Sir Oliver Ingham, d.1344, Seneschal of Gascony, defender of Bordeaux, conqueror of (part of) the Agenais at the beginning of the 100 Years' War, lies uncomfortably on his bed of pebbles in the chancel of Holy Trinity, Ingham, Norfolk, in dappled light.

I've spent much of my life in three locations, these agricultural land classification maps show that grade 3 land predominated, yet here in Norfolk it is mainly arable, in North Somerset mainly pasture, in East Dorset much more arable. All historically were mixed.

Yes, it's a strange film; very much of its time. As was Hemmings.
I know very little of Nolan, other than what's in the general consciousness, so it's good to hear a bit more about him.

Pavement in front of Becket's shrine in the extended, post-fire east end of Canterbury Cathedral. Astrological/monthly labour roundels clearly reordered and incomplete after being moved post fire. But the Opus Sectile? Cosmati as recently suggested? Hmm. Doesn't look right. Must read Warwick Rodwell

A mind-boggling sculpture! The Portonaccio Sarcophagus vividly depicts Roman cavalry vs. Germanic tribes along the Danubeβfar from Gladiator's (2000) take. Bonus: it features "battle truncheons," rare in Roman art. #RomanHistory #Archaeology #AncientRome

Wow indeed, Isabelle. The Chora is a great treasure, containing the height of late Byzantine art that we know of. I've never been, but I believe it's accessible again now.
And Metochites' hat!

It's the Feast of St Nicholas tomorrow, an important holiday in many parts of Europe.
Here is St Nicholas in late 11thC frescoes in the great Carolingian monastery at Novalesa, high in the Cottian Alps near the Mont Cenis pass above Susa, calming the waters and with St Eldradus, an early Abbot.
