Writing a book is just like reading a book except the book hates you

The grownup version of “the floor is lava” is “it appears I’ve gotten dressed to go out too soon and now I have to somehow exist in my home for 12 whole minutes without touching anything covered in pet hair”

The most effective editing move is still the one I stole from George Saunders: read your draft over and over and over again, out loud, until you have to fix the bad parts because you will literally die if you have to read them more time
