Just for the record I have no issue with legitimate asylum seekers, but we need to get a grip of the issue to prevent countless needless deaths in the channel

The idea is to stop those who wouldn't be granted asylum from taking the risk crossing the channel. They already know the legal route would fail, we have to have some way of making them realise the futility of the risk to them

But it doesn't as there are those who wouldn't be granted asylum still tempted to make their way here. The safe legal route would only be used by those genuine cases. The number of deportations show that not all those taking the risk will get to remain.

So if deterents dont work why bother trying to stop people illegally crossing and risking their lives. Might as well go back to the tories plan of shipping them to Rwanda and forgetting about them

Clearly the checks at the moment are inadequate then. Put the emphasis on the checkers and the numbers of those taking a risk on paying cash in hand will go down

That's a hypothetical for the future, clearly systems will have to evolve to keep pace and make it harder to fake - just like money has had to evolve with new features so would this system.

It is though, if people here illegally were not able to work and had no access to benefits how would they survive and in that case why pay smugglers thousands to get them here

It needs to be alongside targeting businesses who employ them. Huge fines and prison sentences for any boss/owner who takes then on

That is the concern with ID cards is who has access to the databases and what can they do with the information on there. If it was limited to basic info and right to remain and work it would help as a deterrent.
