Two mentions of my work in the NYT in a single week. Not too shabby.

Now go cover fascism.

My neighbor lent me one of their dogs to stay with me during the storm and I can’t think of a nicer thing someone could do.

The Administration is hoping for disorder and chaos in response to their inhumane actions. Don’t give them that.

Be peaceful, orderly, and nonviolent. Be tactical, strategic, and organized.

There has never been a more important time to understand nonviolent civil disobedience. It’s the only way.

I don’t think we’re paranoid enough about the depth and coordination of what’s happening right now.

Hundreds of residents signed up for FEMA buyouts after Helene. Not one has been approved. More than a year after applying for a federal buyout, many North Carolina homeowners have heard almost nothing definitive.

The TN results show unabashed progressives are what resonates in Appalachia. Stay-quiet, stay-mid Dems are not the way.

Absolute treat today in class, particularly after yesterday’s Election Day, as @andrewaydin.bsky.social joined my class to talk March and how the comics medium can be such a powerful force for change! Students and I left fired up and ready to get back to work!

Text that reads:

This is a really tough and tumultuous time for race relations in this country. Congressman Lewis, are you worried? Are you hopeful? What do you think are some of the answers to some of the really deep divisions we still see today?

Text that reads:

Lewis: In spite of all of the things, the issues, that we may be confronting today, I’m very hopeful, very optimistic about the future. That’s why I want to see people pick up β€œMarch.” [They will see] we never gave up. We didn’t get lost in a sea of despair. We kept the faith. We kept pushing and pulling. We kept marching. And we made some progress. And when people tell me nothing has changed, I just feel like saying, β€œCome and walk in my shoes.” Our struggle is a struggle to redeem the soul of America. It’s not a struggle that lasts for a few days, a few weeks, a few months, or a few years. It is the struggle of a lifetime, more than one lifetime. But I truly believe that one day we will get there, we will arrive. And if we do it right in America, maybe, just maybe, we can serve as a model for the rest of the world.

Back in 2016, I interviewed the late, legendary Congressman John Lewis for @salon.com about his brilliant graphic-memoir series "March," co-written with @natepowell.bsky.social and @andrewaydin.bsky.social, who also joined the interview.

His answer to this question sticks with me.

Fragile N.C. Residents Lose Medicaid Support for Food and Housing

Food, housing, and healthcare costs are exploding in WNC because Republicans cut programs like this that saved lives and saved money. I’m running because I know what happens when care ends, and I won’t stand by while my neighbors are left behind.

Becoming increasingly clear we’re gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment.

Sorry, I get REALLY mad about this, because I have friends whose lives and careers would be in much better places had they not been fleeced by their publishing partners. So many administrative-side folks claim to love the medium but don't golden rule the folks who make it, and who trust them.
