More research on the value of protected and standard cycleways...
02.06.2025 22:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0These intersections in Florence are a perfect example of why transit priority is also, or even primarily, a problem of street design rather than technology.
The intersection on the left misses a pedestrian crossing due to a lack of refuge space needed to cut pedestrian crossings in multiple phases.
A few years ago "transport poverty" was just a niche academic concept.
Now the EU has published its recommendations on how to tackle it & a helpful data dashboard transport.ec.europa.eu/news-events/...
I have made a thread with my first impressions here: threadreaderapp.com/thread/19270...
Transforming a car-dominated train station with one small project:
β Thousands of e-scooter/e-bike trips
β Hundreds of bikes parked (up from just one!)
β Public transport use increased
β 36.9 tonnes COβ-eq emissions prevented
Partnerships + community = people-first spaces

Amazing to see how many different light configs there are here. If no waiting vehicles/peds, a phase will be skipped.
Bonus phases too, e.g. if no waiting peds then turning cars may get green.

I recommend this, because it involves two VERY smart people, @volts.wtf and @humantransit.bsky.social, talking about a very important topic β better public transit in better cities.

The best way to remake a city is through transport.
By changing how people move, Strasbourg is changing the spaces they use; transitioning from hostile, car-dominated places to ones more vibrant, welcoming, and resilient to todayβs challenges.
