God dammit, breaking my “no political media during vacation” rule but the absolute craven nature of writing an article supposedly dedicated to critiquing the right to spend more time poking the left. Brutal.

Your periodic reminder that Romance is the highest selling genre of literature and it’s not even close.

Possessor feels like it’s dealing with similar themes. Sex, violence, and identity and how those are affected by capital leveraging technology to control your life.

Love that movie.

They’d also have to have the guts to do it.

I say this a lot: Having friends whose brains have been fried by RW propaganda will tell you more than most leftist literature.

It’s good to have both, but it’s no replacement for watching someone’s worst impulses grow and takeover their whole being.

I know you know this, but it deserves repeating: if a left-wing administration made these suggestion the media would obliterate them and Rs would be going on Fox “joking” about marines taking matters into their own hands.

I’ve often wondered how much the ferocity of other continents’ terrain and wildlife probably just made entire tribes shrug and say “Fuck it.”

“Maybe we’ll expand. What’s that? A snake the size of a tree you say. Well, shit.”

Or, and hear me out, it’s all preamble to handing over billions to Silicon Valley VCs to build drone ships or whatever they think up.

To be fair, it was Vince Russos idea. Vince was the idiot who signed off on it.

Brawl for All ended like 3 wrestlers careers. All time catastrophe.

Would not be surprised if this describes most people at this point. We all discover politics at different points, but the speed and scope with which people went from non-political to fanatics is dizzying.

“Say Nothing” - Done
“Mother Night” - Done

Next: “Escape from Freedom” by Erich Fromm

I suspect this one will take a bit longer.

I’ve never seen a better description of arguing with a conspiracy theorist better than the “cuckoo clock from Hell” description. Keeping perfect time for 4 minutes only to then skip ahead 8. Then start counting again for a few minutes before jumping ahead another dozen and never noticing the blip.

“any given gear, though mutilated, will have at its circumference unbroken sequences of teeth that are immaculately maintained, that are exquisitely machined.“
This is it. Some parts are so
intact, so “immaculately maintained” that it makes the missing pieces all the more obvious.

Like a lot of people, I’ve witnessed, to varying degrees, the “willful filing off of gear teeth” by people in my life.

But the part that really brings this piece home for me is the focus on the unfiled gears.

Highlighted passage from Vonnegut’s Mother Night:

I have never seen a more sublime demonstration of the totalitarian mind, a mind which might be likened unto a system of gears whose teeth have been filed off at random. Such a snaggle-toothed thought machine, driven by a standard or even a substandard libido, whirls with the jerky, noisy, gaudy pointlessness of a cuckoo clock in Hell.

Jones wasn’t completely crazy. The dismaying thing about the classic totalitarian mind is that any given gear, though mutilated, will have at its circumference unbroken sequences of teeth that are immaculately maintained, that are exquisitely machined. Hence the cuckoo clock in Hell—keeping perfect time for eight minutes and thirty-three seconds, jumping ahead fourteen minutes, keeping perfect time for six seconds, jumping ahead two seconds, keeping perfect time for two hours and one second, then jumping ahead a year. The missing teeth, of course, are simple, obvious truths, truths available and comprehensible even to ten-year-olds, in most cases. The willful filing off of gear teeth, the willful doing without certain obvious pieces of information—

Finished up Mother Night. Leave it to Vonnegut to so perfectly capture something I’ve been struggling to describe for years

The more extreme and unprecedented things get in politics the dumber these people will have to act.

The elevation of pop culture to political prominence is a way to mask that none of these people understand how anything actually works so they argue about halftime shows.
