Retail sites often fail blind shoppers. Could agentic AI fill the gap?

Tools like Innosearch can find products, describe images, and add items to your basket.

Why content labelling is guaranteed to fail A personal plea, not for the first time, to let an old idea be consigned to history.

Yes. I linked it from a paper I've drafted for the age-restricted content workshop, see philarcher.org/diary/2025/w.... I'll submit that as is before the deadline unless I have feedback to the contrary. I almost certainly can't go to the workshop, which is a pain.

The cover of a book called Food Person by an author called Adam Roberts

This is the multiverse where my semi-automatic purchases of books by Adam Roberts as they're published crosses the manifold. I wonder whether *this* Adam Roberts' readers enjoy @adamroberts.bsky.social's work. #mustPayMoreAttentionToDetail

Will be v interested to catch up with you soon. There are several GS1 folks there as we try and piece together evidence for how to proceed. I'm seeing strong cause for a f2f meetup. Will be in touch.

8 years at GS1 I was very obviously upset to leave W3C. 8 years on, I'm happy about the switch

A minor anniversary of absolutely no significance to anyone but I've now been at GS1 longer than any other job I've done - and that seemed worth a mention philarcher.org/diary/2025/8...

Caroline Haslett - Wikipedia

It was designed by Caroline Haslett en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolin... (which I admit I only know through Hannah Fry's championing of her). It's clunky and a pain to carry around with you but yes, it's the safest one there is.

Nailing your political colours to your business is bad business If you're selling something, my advice is: keep your politics to yourself

I was looking forward to reading a Neal Asher novel for the first time. Having read the frontispiece, I need to wash my hands, literally and figuratively philarcher.org/diary/2025/p...

Swiss glacier collapse: How the village of Blatten was wiped off the map - BBC News Nine million cubic metres of rock and ice came crashing down on Blatten after a landslide.

This content of this article is both fascinating (mountain collapses!) and v worrying at a time when far right politics is urging ever more fossil fuel use. It's also *brilliant* Web design, made for scrolling on your phone www.bbc.co.uk/news/resourc...

Responsive (not reactive) meaning that the design automatically responds to the size of the presentation canvas. The thought process starts from a small space and responds to the additional space if available.

15 Years of Responsive Web Design Noting the 15th anniversary of an article that changed the way websites are designed

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed both of these books this month I'd love to have been there. Maybe a repeat one day with Topping's in Ely? (Have read all your novels to date, Eve. I think the Cure was your best yet. Shades of Wymondham's Trouble With Lichen but with more dire consequences).

As a bibliophile and collector of signed first editions, I've pre-ordered the signed edition from Waterstone's. Will hope for opportunity to get a personal dedication added from my old boss too, although I rarely see him these days.

Trust, but verify - Wikipedia

I had reason to look up the origin of the phrase "trust but verify" earlier. It orginates from Russia: doveryai, no proveryai (довСряй, Π½ΠΎ провСряй). The phrase and its origin seem very apposite for today's situation en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trust,_...

I really enjoyed this one. It combines the narrative opportunities of guests coming and going from a hotel with a good dollop of space opera and rich character detail.

The day there's an alternative for my house, i.e. a decent connection with >=5MB/s, I'll cancel my Starlink. My rural location means it's inescapable but I hate paying into the moral vacuum every month. UK internet infrastructure is dire.
