one of the consistently interesting things about ACA criticism since it was signed into law is how critics discount or ignore the medicaid expansion

this isn’t a “be happy with what you have” argument but a recognition of the very real impact of the ACA and a partial explanation for why ordinary democrats are inclined to strongly defend it even with its flaws and failures.

like yeah sure the ACA was far from perfect (although “expansion of the welfare state was hard fought but woefully incomplete” is basically the history of american social policy), but it is difficult to overstate how important the Medicaid expansion has been to expanding health care access

in its original form the medicaid expansion was basically mandatory and would have very clearly formed the nucleus of a genuinely universal system. and in its neutered form (thanks john roberts) it is still a powerful policy that can be built on and expanded in straightforward ways
