Apples still on a tree in an old orchard at Scarness by Bassenthwaite Lake in the Lake District yesterday. This orchard is shown on maps from the 1800s.

The Howgill Fells in East Cumbria are extremely treeless. The ecological diversity of these fells has been severely damaged by centuries of sheep farming. This applies to most of upland Britain.

An old stone-lined tunnel near Rydal in Cumbria today. Old maps suggest it was part of an 18th Century slate quarry.

Stuart Maconie said β€˜to southerners, the north means desolation, arctic temperatures, mushy peas, a cultural wasteland with limited shopping opportunities. To northerners it means home, truth, beauty, valour, romance, warm and characterful people, real beer and decent chip shops’.

I did not know that. Thanks for letting me know. I have just had a look at the Historic England listing which also mentions 'Bridal of Triermain'.

Castle Rock near Thirlmere. A probable hillfort site associated with Arthurian legend, i.e. the Castle Rock of Triermain, which is linked to King Arthur through Sir Walter Scott's poem, "The Bridal of Triermain", which popularized a legend about a castle located there.

Kirkby Stephen Parish Church Cumbria. It is sometimes called the "Cathedral of the Dales" and, in Cumbria, only Kendal Parish Church is larger. There was an Anglo-Saxon church on this site and then a Norman church but this was rebuilt in c. 1230 and has been significantly altered since.

The Millennium Stone, Derwentwater is a sculpture by Peter Randall-Page, made in 1995. I have also seen it called the Centenary Stone and the Hundred Year Stone. It was placed here to commemorate the Centenary of the National Trust in the Lake District.

Kirkoswald castle in Cumbria received a license from King John in 1210 to fortify the original structure. The Castle was later destroyed by Robert the Bruce in 1314, but was rebuilt and extended in the late 15th Century.
All that remains now is a tower some 60 feet high.
