J showed us around his campus, then he picked out a vegetarian restaurant from the student guidebook he'd gotten during O-Week. Dad drove us up north to Belmont and we three had dinner at the Chicago Diner.

Our first date: spring break, 2002. My dad and I had driven from Olympia, Washington, to Chicago so I could finally meet this @xolok.bsky.social kid off the internet. Thrilling!
