valentine's day isn't just for couples, it's also a day to celebrate love. for instance, i would love it if housing prices came down.

Someone on letterboxd liked a review of mine, so i read theirs for the same film. I've screenshotted one of their comments because it's one of the worst opinions you can have and i need to share my rage. Why even watch movies?!

I'm in a laundromat in Berlin and a young British lad is on the phone, presumably to a parent, asking if he can put his blacks in with his navies and whites because the internet confused him. Bless.

A β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…Β½ review of Henry Fonda for President (2024) I love the idea of Henry Fonda being so convinced by a play’s realism that left the theatre and, in his words, β€œscowled at cops.” Taking its lead from an episode of Maude, a sitcom starring Bea Arthur...

I wrote a short response here. It's very good! letterboxd.com/cinemelo/fil...

I did actually watch this last night in my hostel room and it's fantastic! Can recommend for any and all interested in film/history/politics/America. Never a bad time listening to Henry Fonda talk for three hours.

You might not know this, but if you ever need a mood lift you can just listen to "Your Disco Needs You" by Kylie Minogue

Gah, I finally have a chance to see my much-wanted HENRY FONDA FOR PRESIDENT - thank you Le CinΓ©ma Club for streaming it - but I am hostel-living and working on a study tour in Germany for the next two weeks and so worry that I might miss my window!

This is a great question. I think for me it is about teaching them to handle experiences of boredom, frustration, and confusion. Sitting with uncertainty, finding your way through an opaque image, letting go of your need to be better than the film, etc., are all skills that can be taught.

I have to say that despite everything going on in the world and the chaos in my life, I am very soothed by this image from a 1931 film of John Wayne's extremely nice ... *ahem* rear

Yesterday, I saw a photo of Scott Morrison - a photo I've seen many times before - and, the current PM's weak leadership and sycophancy making me feel such profound disappointment and similar anger, for a brief moment I mistook him for Anthony Albanese.

On this January 26, Australia deserves a real leader, not a craven vassal As the international rules-based order becomes a thing of the past, Anthony Albanese keeps Australia locked into a world where we pretend it still exists.

"Albanese is thus yesterday’s man, clinging to the verities of a post-war world that has vanished, stubbornly keeping Australia locked into an increasingly unsustainable fantasy of rules-based orders..." My so-called country's government is utterly sickening at the moment.

Days of Complicity β€’ EQUATOR A legal scholar’s diary of Trump’s return to power

Essential reading to make sense of some of the horror. "People like Stephen Miller and Kristi Noem are deeply un-American ... in the sense that they despise what the country actually is – how it has been demographically, culturally and politically transformed by the twentieth century."

Australian mythmaking gets crafty... I was tempted by this very cute Ned Kelly hand puppet at a market stall, but as a cultural critic I resisted
