I loved this piece.

I can see the value in that but also I've got my fingers in other work(s) treating the subject more comprehensively (multi-decade/future) - which is, I think, very needed. I sort of want to pull a bunch of people into a recording/podcast once it's all out...or cartoon. A GIGANTIC hand-drawn cartoon.

Wall Streetโ€™s DEI Retreat Has Officially Begun Programs once meant for people of color and women are now open to all.

Wall Street is retreating from DEI, as programs once meant for minorities and women are now open to all.

One ex-exec says sheโ€™s had white women ask what opportunities their sons will have if Wall Street focuses on promoting underrepresented groups

Same, but there are risks. I'm from NY. I talk really fast (but have learned to slow down to accommodate others). That + caffeine = Bad.

I think the reason will overlap why Twilight was such a big deal. I don't actually have a grand theory though...

Video statement from NSIDCโ€™s Twila Moon at a pre-AGU workshop on polar geoengieering projects. These ideas have been recently publicized in a โ€œGiant Antarctic Ocean Curtain to stop sea level riseโ€ press article.

I wonder if otherwise-healthy people start having allergies to things like technology or social media after too much exposure. Like an evolutionary protection mechanism.

I wonder if this is just me, but I deal with technology in the form of supercomputers on the cloud for work and when I'm not working, I basically want everything to be Stone Age-friendly. It's like going to the mall - I've got a set time (20min) I can deal with shopping and then I just run out.

Totally legitimate. I only get pissed when people (who I do not work in and admin role for. which is zero people.) ask me to "send them a reminder". We all have calendars.

No, this really *IS* a compliment. I think pretty much any actual structural change involves databases, spreadsheets and a lot of people having to read some well-written manual. Bullshit changes tend to come in the form of "rousing speeches". Which are fun, but usually useless.

I think this is boring and is also addressing one of the most important concrete things that we can do to improve academia (and diversity within it). In general: one of the most unfortunate things about adulthood is that Actually Important Things are Boring AF.

This list is awesome and I'm keeping it forever for future arguments. Only complaint is that each quote fits into a Decision Tree for Shit Nice Racists Say. Someone with art skills needs to make that.

When there is massive unemployment in the black community, it is called a social problem. But when there is massive unemployment in the white community, it is called a Depression.

We look around every day and we see thousands and millions of people making inadequate wages. Not only do they work in our hospitals, they work in our hotels, they work in our laundries, they work in domestic service, they find themselves underemployed. You see, no labor is really menial unless you're not getting adequate wages. People are always talking about menial labor. But if you're getting a good (wage) as I know that through some unions they've brought it up...that isn't menial labor. What makes it menial is the income, the wages.

Ohio has basically defacto banned trans healthcare for adults using a similar strategy to why there was only a handful of abortion clinics in the entire Midwest before the Dobbs decision (TRAP laws)

cis people please repost this so this info doesn't get stuck in the queer social bubble

Yeah, I've hit "Kids these days" point and reminded colleagues (who went straight to grad school after undergrad and now have fancy titles) how (a) we're old; things are different (b) remember when I held your hair when you barfed on yourself before your first invited talk? Yeah...shut up, girl.

So... curious what people think about Hurrell at a WCRP conference calling for the *IPCC* to conduct a study on solar geoengineering? I see it as pretty obvious that we need more than peer-review to ensure feasibility for any geoengineering. Is there a downside to large orgs (like IPCC) running it?

Good academic social media experience: when people celebrate science in my own discipline ...but I've never read any of the authors before. This demonstrates that the networks I know of aren't *actually* that powerful, and also that there are whole new worlds of Potential Science Friends.

Holy shit, people need to see "Us". My sister and I deal with Christmas at home by binge-watching horror movies and this is one of the best of the last 5 yrs. Lupita Nyong'o just hit the Olivia Colman / Gillian Anderson space of "I'll just watch whatever movie she's in"
