Can it be made less complex while still allowing lawyers to keep their careers? Sure. Any society is still going to need laws, so we'll always need lawyers and judges.

Laws exist because we need rules to navigate having a society. Lawyers and judges exist as people with knowledge of those rules in order to best apply them to society, since not every person has much reason to grok all possible laws.

But the COMPLEXITY is a UX problem.

Put another way, a lot of the reason why laws are confusing, why taxes are confusing, why insurance is confusing, why basically anything other than SCIENCE is confusing, is because lawyers made it so in order to justify their own existence.

There ought to be more work done to make what a democratic government does more transparent to the people being governed by it. Not enough people vote because they don't see how it impacts them. REQUIRING people to vote or incentivizing it doesn't help anything if it's still uninformed.

Every permanent structure ought to have some method of power generation. Live in a place with a lot of sunny days? Solar. Frequent winds? Turbines. Oceans? Tidal power. Rivers. Fucking WATERWHEELS.

Sex work should be legalized. Like, in the Wokest Possible World of my dreams, all jobs (sex work included) get access to good healthcare without the rigamarole of insurance, but in a more practical world, legalizing sex work to make sure workers have at least basic protections feels doable.

Community service needs to be something everyone does (and they should be compensated for it). That can take many diff. forms (jury duty, crossing guard, working polls, waste processing, content moderation) to account for different levels of accessibility and ability, but the point is it's EVERYONE.

For sure. If accessibility addon devs are stuck in a "don't ask/ don't tell" ecosystem with low developer support, it's not gonna be anything like WoW's space.

Yeah, this is a more accurate (and less expletive-filled :p) rendition of the official position, that's stayed the same.

Would the community ALSO be improved by addressing more accessibility issues so that more players can make play possible? Yes, absolutely.

It ain't an easy square to circle and I'm not sure there's a right answer that works for everyone.

And the no addon policy is also good from the standpoint of "if you're harshing people for not having an addon or not meeting some arbitrary standard you're sussing out from sniffing packets for DPS parses, you can fuck off!" being the official policy. It's simple and I think it improves community.

Granted, I don't want to advocate for people doing unpaid labor for AAA studios who can definitely afford to pay for it, but my point is that there's give and take; the no addon policy IS more fair to console players, which is not a problem WoW has.

The biggest issue I have with FF14 is that the no addons policy is a net loss for users with accessibility problems.

Like, the optimal solution is game studios working to address those, but WoW's community has demonstrated that some talented users can gin up solutions too.

... i know I'm doing that thing that everyone hates, where someone says something on line and I, a basic dude, figure out a way to twist it up and make it about me, but this feels different. Like this is LITERALLY what I did, and it worked until it suddenly didn't, and the not-knowing is paralyzing.

Part of it is fear that whatever happened to me will happen again and I have no inkling on how to prevent it. Part of it is the general state of this industry and how a LOT of people with much more impressive portfolios than me are also in the market, so it's also just hard to compete.

This is both true and real and also how I met a lot of my friends and got work. Like, really, just be normal and personable and aim to make friends instead of contacts. It works AND you might get cool people who link you things AND you might even get to scritch their pets' chins one day. All wins!
