"Writing is hard work. A clear sentence is no accident. Very few sentences come out right the first time, or even the third time. Remember this in moments of despair. If you find that writing is hard, it's because it is hard.β

A photo of the limpet on a black background - photographed side on. It has a short cone-shaped shell with an open bottom, where you can see it's fleshy parts inside. The shell is marked by rows of ripple patterns, which are different areas of growth.
Surviving AND thriving?
This newly-discovered limpet from the Arctic is an icon for our times.
β¬ Good under pressure (3,053m deep)
π§ Happy in freezing waters
β€οΈβπ₯ ALSO fine on 300Β°C hydrothermal vents
π§ͺ Fine with acidic water dissolving its shell...
π ...because it grows new shell from inside!

After my second summer working as one of the bakers at McMurdo Station I spent two weeks with my parents and younger brother in Hawaii. I don't remember which island it was, probably Maui, but we had a great time.

The author of this post's dad stands at the other end of the table facing the instructor. A woman in a long white lab coat stands behind him with her hands in her pockets.
This is one of my favourite photos of my dad (he's on the left, at the end of the table). It's British Hong Kong in 1954-5 and he's a recent arrival from Toishan. Dad didn't end up making a career out of baking, but I did a fair amount of bakery work in my [β¦]
