"Writing is hard work. A clear sentence is no accident. Very few sentences come out right the first time, or even the third time. Remember this in moments of despair. If you find that writing is hard, it's because it is hard.”
William Zinsser, who died on this day in 2015

A photo of the limpet on a black background - photographed side on. It has a short cone-shaped shell with an open bottom, where you can see it's fleshy parts inside. The shell is marked by rows of ripple patterns, which are different areas of growth.

In the foreground, a statue of the Virgin Mary is protected by a metal frame forming a curved arch. A large crucifix is fastened to the top of the frame. Some of the dormitory buildings of McMurdo Station are visible in the middle distance. Observation Hill is partially visible behind "Mac Town". The entire scene is covered in a light dusting of snow.

A sepia toned black and white image. A group of Chinese people are standing around a long table. A smiling culinary instructor appears to be pouring something out of a skillet into a bowl at one end of the table while a group of eight students watch attentively. The author of this post's dad stands at the other end of the table facing the instructor. A woman in a long white lab coat stands behind him with her hands in her pockets.

This is one of my favourite photos of my dad (he's on the left, at the end of the table). It's British Hong Kong in 1954-5 and he's a recent arrival from Toishan. Dad didn't end up making a career out of baking, but I did a fair amount of bakery work in my […]
