One of the things that makes it so hard to deal with Trump supporters/media is that they seem to actively revel in being made to look like gullible rubes.

Caveats being:

1) we know in the IR literature that leaders horny for a deal are likely prone to take bad deals. That could be a problem for the U.S. for something important.

2) who’s to say target publics in places like Mexico don’t punish their leaders for the optics as this repeats.

I’m sure Trump will eventually figure this out, but world leaders have seen his shtick before and know he’s prone to bite on the optics over the substance.
