People were up in arms about "losing their parking spots" and how making the street safer would reduce their home values. One woman (who had kids at Lawton), literally said "just stay the fuck off my street" at the public meeting. Someone described the wide street as "park-like." Insanity.

Yeah, I argued for chicanes, raised sidewalks, etc. We did get some bumpouts and mid-block crosswalks, but people still drive really fast and roll through the stop signs. And there are no parking signs or curb markings. The opposition from the people who live on 7th was unhinged.

Couldn't believe how bad this was in my neighborhood for parking during the football game this weekend. There are no curb markings or signs (South 7th near Lawton), so cars were overhanging mid-block crosswalks, curb cuts, etc. None of this was addressed after the rebuild of South 7th. #a2council

Drivers slow down more for speed humps than they do for stop signs. Time to put a raised crosswalk at every intersection.

i have a close call WEEKLY! also i shouldnβt have to fear for my life every time i bike down university & packard thursday through saturday bc of drunk undergrads, or avoid reckless and/or drunk gameday out of towners bc traffic & drinking laws are enforced at a shockingly low threshold here

Oh man, sorry to hear that. But I totally agree with that statement. We arenβt serious enough about it. But itβs definitely a choice.
13.10.2025 20:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
I want to agree with you, but people who are actually trying to get somewhere on their bike (not just casual riding) won't go to the trouble to take the bridge. They will stay on the street, and it will remain dangerous. We have to stop worrying about making things inconvenient for cars.

Again, the solutions here are simple, but we refuse to implement them. We (local gov't) prioritize cars over people.

I was in the pedestrian refuge, with the lights flashing, stepped out to cross the other half of the road, and had to jump back. 3 of the 4 lanes had cars stopped, and another car, blasted through the crossing at much higher than the speed limit (which is 45 and already ridiculous).

Walking home from the UM W Soccer game last week, and had to cross AA-Saline Rd in the dark around 9:30pm. I hit the beg button for the flashers. I counted 12 cars that went through without slowing down, and another almost hit me WHILE I WAS CROSSING @crashesinannarbor.bsky.social

This can be fixed. We just need people to care more about people than they do about cars.

We really need to be able to build single stair buildings over 3 stories, but that is an issue that needs to be fixed by the state rather than the city. I am already in Jason Morgan's ear about this, and he's receptive. Make sure you let him know you support increased heights for single stair bldgs.

Looking down the canal in Annecy, the buildings of the old town lining the sides. A mountain peeking out beyond the buildings.
The bike trail as it leaves Annecy, with trees, lake, and mountains in the background. A e-bike in the foreground.
Looking down the street of the old town with cafes along both sides, full of diners during dinner time. The mountains are visible beyond the buildings in the evening light.
A look from our train through the window showing the bustling street and an electric bus.
Iβm on the train about to depart #Annecy to return to Paris and then to fly back home to #AnnArbor. Annecy is roughly the size of Ann Arbor, and has a great bus system, incredible, complete #bike infrastructure, and an active train station to take you anywhere. Wishing I didnβt have to go home. π’

Iβm not intending to sound combative at all, but bad driving can easily be prevented with good road design. Itβs been shown to work all over the world.
09.09.2025 15:31 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
We redesign the roads. We take things that work in other places and we implement them. None of this is rocket science. When this stretch of road was being redesigned, I lobbied for raised intersections/continuous sidewalks, and a road design that would slow cars. It fell on deaf ears.

Walking past Lawton Elementary this morning, I watched two cars roll through a stop sign, and another one stop in the crosswalk. Are we ever going to actually take action, or are we just going to pretend we care about safety of pedestrians and school children? #a2council

I'm saying get ride of a car lane on each side, and expand the bike lanes.
