I think there’s truth to this but it gives Bari too much credit. The Free Press has about 150k paid subscribers - a bit over three times more than Chapo Trap House. The reason it feels bigger is that Bari’s message resonates with elites.

Not that they won’t try, but a complicating wrinkle for Bari is that at least on television, CBS News has very few hours of programming to even propagandize from compared to any of their cable-based competitors.

I think Ellison overestimated the reach of what he was buying for both FP and CBS.

they’re both good at getting ultra wealthy elites to give them money by telling those elites what they want to hear, which is basically the polar opposite of what you need as a network news provider who depends upon a national audience

never say never, i guess, but neither ellison nor weiss have the kind of experience that should give anyone strong confidence that they’ll be able to even maintain CBS’ current viewership levels, let alone improve them. both have basically only ever run niche projects.

I think the counter argument to “Ellison and Weiss will turn CBS News into an unstoppable propaganda machine” is Bezos’s WaPo which lost basically all the talent and also is in a subscription death spiral
