15.10.2025 08:40 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0A more direct comparison would be The Bulwark, which has a bit over 100k paid subscribers. The New York Times has 12 million.
05.10.2025 03:27 โ ๐ 350 ๐ 9 ๐ฌ 5 ๐ 0I think thereโs truth to this but it gives Bari too much credit. The Free Press has about 150k paid subscribers - a bit over three times more than Chapo Trap House. The reason it feels bigger is that Bariโs message resonates with elites.
05.10.2025 03:26 โ ๐ 688 ๐ 48 ๐ฌ 16 ๐ 0Bari is going to run CBS News not because of her journalism, or even because of The Free Press, but because much of the mainstream media serves as a vessel for elites to distribute power to their allies
05.10.2025 16:57 โ ๐ 1470 ๐ 192 ๐ฌ 12 ๐ 8Nonetheless, in an era when many major publications are bleeding readers, Bari spun a niche column into a media outlet with a sizable email list and a recognizable brand. Paramount will try to take what sheโs built and scale it up, and they will probably fail, because Paramount doesnโt know how to do that. Bari will be gifted control of CBS News, a declining brand spread across several dying mediums, she will try to turn it around, and she will probably fail, because she doesnโt know how to do that.
05.10.2025 16:48 โ ๐ 623 ๐ 39 ๐ฌ 7 ๐ 2I wrote about the ascendance of Bari Weiss from a hack columnist to media royalty, and what it means for the future of CBS News.

12.10.2025 19:40 โ ๐ 561 ๐ 18 ๐ฌ 12 ๐ 0a lot of these stories assume The Free Press is a business success. but is it? they generate a ton of subscription revenue but they spend so much that they needed to raise $15M last year. we can't see the financials, but there's a good chance that the operation is a money pit.

13.10.2025 15:52 โ ๐ 2350 ๐ 99 ๐ฌ 188 ๐ 53the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

How many Conservative or Reform supporters even know that immigrants have to pass a language test? They object to immigration on emotional grounds, not because they have dry objections to eligibility criteria.

15.10.2025 08:28 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0much like when Hillary Clinton called these people "deplorable," it was the most correct Biden had been in years.

14.10.2025 18:00 โ ๐ 75 ๐ 6 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 2once again, anyone in media who believed republicans were offended by Charlie Kirk jokes or whatever is either a crypto conservative or incredibly stupid www.politico.com/news/2025/10...
14.10.2025 17:58 โ ๐ 303 ๐ 68 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 2is this how CBS is gonna work now? using bari weiss's personal blog to launder poorly sourced and lightly edited stories (complete with a misspelling of mamdani's name in the headline) that would never pass muster if reported directly by a real news source?
13.10.2025 15:32 โ ๐ 1250 ๐ 219 ๐ฌ 26 ๐ 12politicoโs owner must have put in a call to the editors over the weekend, because their top articles on shutdown are comically one-sided against dems after reporting over the weekend that house republicans are starting to crumble
13.10.2025 18:30 โ ๐ 308 ๐ 51 ๐ฌ 9 ๐ 1Not that they wonโt try, but a complicating wrinkle for Bari is that at least on television, CBS News has very few hours of programming to even propagandize from compared to any of their cable-based competitors.
I think Ellison overestimated the reach of what he was buying for both FP and CBS.
theyโre both good at getting ultra wealthy elites to give them money by telling those elites what they want to hear, which is basically the polar opposite of what you need as a network news provider who depends upon a national audience
13.10.2025 19:09 โ ๐ 105 ๐ 11 ๐ฌ 4 ๐ 0never say never, i guess, but neither ellison nor weiss have the kind of experience that should give anyone strong confidence that theyโll be able to even maintain CBSโ current viewership levels, let alone improve them. both have basically only ever run niche projects.
13.10.2025 19:06 โ ๐ 628 ๐ 73 ๐ฌ 26 ๐ 1I think the counter argument to โEllison and Weiss will turn CBS News into an unstoppable propaganda machineโ is Bezosโs WaPo which lost basically all the talent and also is in a subscription death spiral
