I know everyone is excited about Murderbot but I just have to throw a shout-out to the Books of Raksura by @marthawells.com

Just finished book 1 and it was really great. Like keeping me from sleeping great.

The hush of winter lingers but

Candle flames flicker like the first whispers of spring, banishing winterโ€™s hush.

Milk, white, rich, and sacred, flows in tribute to life stirring beneath the frost.

Birch, the tree of beginnings, stands watch at the threshold of change.

I love this idea! I wonder also about maybe moving away from the idea of โ€˜consumerโ€™ to โ€˜participantโ€™โ€ฆ I think of the energy exchange present in live performanceโ€ฆ

Thatโ€™s a helpful reframing. Thank you!

I had to go back and doublecheck I hadnโ€™t already shared the article, before resharing this with daanisโ€™ thoughts includedโ€ฆ.

When I joined bluesky, one of the first accounts I went looking for, hoping to find their presence here, was this one.

Their writing and thinking always pushes me out of my comfort zone in the best possible way.

I have been digging deep into inhabiting and being inhabited by the ever unfolding now.

Would my fellow students try and defend us? So many obviously didnโ€™t feel we should be thereโ€ฆ would they just quietly acquiesce? Or would they try and interpose or help us flee?

35 years on, a generation, has much changed?

These were women only a couple years older than myself. Contemporaries.

I attended an electrical engineering program starting only five years after this happened, about 6 women in a class of nearly 200, and I remember wondering how it would play out if it happened again in one of my lectures?

A stone monument in Minto Park, Ottawa covered with snow.

Designed by cj fleury it is called โ€˜Enclave: The Ottawa Womenโ€™s Monumentโ€™.

From wikipedia:
The central piece of the monument is a 2-metre-long (6.6ย ft) uncut upright granite stone. On its rough surface is a smooth indented double-pointed oval, or yoni, containing engravings. The main engraving consists of the same text in English and French. In English it reads:

โ€˜To honour and to grieve
all women
abused and murdered by men
envision a world without violence
where women are
respected
and
freeโ€™

Illustrations of a three-swirl symbol (or triskele), the phases of the moon, waves, and female figures also appear on the stone's face.

Surrounding this central stone are 37 smaller stones, placed in an open spiral, each engraved with the name of a woman killed by an act of violence perpetrated by a man.

Beautiful list of local independent bookstores (and maps!)โ€ฆ.

Remember that even if they donโ€™t have the book you want on the shelf, they can order it in for you.
