Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this yearβ€˜s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. The Spanish PM said this at Columbia University yesterday:

β€œDefending your country is one thing. But killing 60,000 civilians, bombing hospitals, and starving children to death is something else entirely.”

I understand why editors prefer to avoid using pseudonyms for sources, but when (multiple) whole categories of people are in legitimate danger, maybe its time to reconsider that policy so that said endangered people's stories can still be told.

Powerful people, conservatives and corporations surrendering power to Trump and Big Government once claimed to believe in sharply limiting federal authority. They talked about a government so weak they could drown it in a bathtub. Now they're racing to curry favor with Trump and Federal bureaucrats.

Defiant nuns flee Austrian care home for their abandoned convent in the Alps Sisters Bernadette, Regina and Rita needed a locksmith to get back into their convent, defying Church leaders.

This is a wonderful story. These women could be characters in Leonora Carrington's The Hearing Trumpet!

There's no way to say this without sounding like an ecofascist (which I'm not), but humans are responsible for species extinction. It's good to get rid of invasive species that we brought, but we should also address climate change, habitat loss, overexploitation, pollution, and disease.

What IS the proper thing to feel & say when someone who spends much of their time successfully influencing decision-makers to NOT take any responsible action to prevent completely preventable gun violence, including mass school shootings, himself becomes a victim of that gun violence?

Fears for England riverbank habitats amid relaxed post-Brexit rules Exclusive: Analysis shows farmers ploughing to the edge of waterways, destroying crucial wildlife ecosystems

Even under much-hated EU farming rules, farmers had to keep a 2-metre buffer between their fields and rivers. Post-Brexit farmers may try to increase income by ploughing up to river edge

More than 400km2 of riverside habitat may have been lost

The biggest scandal in US public life *ought* to be that we are the richest country in history & yet our infrastructure sucks, our transportation choices suck, our cities suck, our healthcare sucks, our public administration sucks, & in dozens of little ways, our daily lives suck.

Trigger warning.

β€œIn crashes, SUVs are more likely to strike vital organs in the core of adults’ bodies & heads of children. Hitting pedestrians above their center of gravity means they’re more likely to be knocked forward & down and then be driven over.”

Plus more likely to hit in the 1st place.

Wages of unionized workers are 13% higher than their nonunion counterparts.

But unions also set a higher pay standard that all workers enjoy.

In high-union-density states, median household income is $12,000 higher than in low-union-density states.

This is why unions are vital.

Factually institutions like CDC, DoD and FEMA form a wall of security around Americans and their children, lessening incredibly dangerous threats from deadly forces (climate, storms, disease, foreign enemies, etc). Many top nonpartisan experts now believe that wall is being torn down.

Very interesting data that shows that bikes are twice as fast compared to motor vehicles in London city.

The average speeds of cars around London City is 10kmh (15kmh in Greater London). 74% of car trips are less than 10km.

Kristi Noem waives environmental laws to build Trump's wall through a wildlife refuge It's not justified, conservationists say. "It’s just incredibly cruel.”

Conservation advocates said that there is no national security justification for building a wall through the national wildlife refuge.

They warn that the wall will threaten wildlife and cut off communities from the Rio Grande.
