there are very specific fields and uses that could benefit from AI (example: learning orca pod dialects that our human ears literally can’t differentiate), but anything that involves building something from nothing is off limits.

I had a recent conversation with someone who asked me if I would play a video game he “made” using AI tools to code most of it for him. I said hell no I would not touch it. “even if *I* made it??” no. I have zero tolerance for it. learn to code.

I think this aptly expresses how deeply misunderstood art is by GenAI people. the act of creation is intertwined with our whole being. art is not math: you can’t put it in a calculator and have it solved for you. I would also rather leave the planet than allow a soulless machine to create for me.

last night I restocked most of my patches in the shop! I had so many that were only available in-person, but with markets done for the year, I wanted to get them listed and sent on to new homes! 🖤

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

With double the number of legs (and tails) and an underdeveloped set of wings, this mutated fawn is easily the largest wet specimen of the collection. As if in reverence, it's pillar-like preservation jar has been decorated in ancient symbols.

On the left a deer fetus floats in preservative fluid within a mason jar. On the right another fawn wet specimen is bottled. In its short life it grew one large, lonely eye in the center of its forehead.

Dedicated to bumblebees, who've within the past few years been the first insects to demonstrate "play" behavior, including rolling a tiny wood ball into a goal.

I just ordered a handful of gems (and mysteries, haha). there were some treasures from the 90s in there, as well as a plethora of old new age spirituality and queer books (some more interesting than others). I’m excited to peek through these (and most of them were only $3-$5)

just be patient with yourself. surround yourself with other people also doing what you’re doing. don’t be afraid of the discomfort, because the benefit of doing more with your brain always outweighs the tiny hit of dopamine you get from automating a task, or scrolling for hours. I promise! 🧵

if you’re someone who finds they don’t have the skills you wish you had because of digital distractions, please know that it is never too late to learn how to be a better reader, how to speak a language, how to maintain a car, how to clean or cook, how to improve on literally any subject— 🧵

not ALL convenience is bad. but there should be balance. the chaos of introducing AI to the delicate ecosystem of learning in schools is… I mean, I can’t imagine being a teacher right now, and all you teachers out there deserve so much support and more resources… 🧵

but now, we still follow that path of ease without questioning it, even if it is antithetical to future survival. it takes more brainpower to think ahead, so we default to what feels the most convenient, conserves energy, and allows us to continue to sit in comfort and contentment. 🧵

as a species, we are programmed to look for the easiest way to do things. as hunter-gatherers, it was looking for the easiest way to survive, burn fewer precious calories. we needed “easy” then to stay alive longer, to help offspring survive past childhood. 🧵

even using AI for brainstorming or list-making or whatever else folks say is harmless… that is what our brains are meant to do on their own. AI is not a tool to support thought. it is a way to avoid thinking at all. 🧵

use of AI in any capacity is a fast track to dulling crucial neural pathways, making thinking and processing ideas harder. it is actually true that “if we don’t use it, we lose it.” 🧵
