Translation (Fr-Eng) and teaching English for a living. Music (rock/metal), sport (football), history (ignorant dabbling) for fun. Politics if I feel my mood dropping below incandescent & I need a fury booster. Seldom, if ever, actually gruntled.

There had better be a secret tunnel between them. Ideally at least partly built with ships timbers from the Armada.

True, but I wonder about the relative proportion compared to tourists reading rubbish translations.
I wonder too how much literature is perceived as translation at the time, especially the classics. e.g. Not sure I'd ever really actively considered Heidi as a translation before now, altho it is.

Imagine if they did, and someone in Saudi asks where they got the idea.
"Well, there used to be this ground called Gay Mea.... Oh, well, never mind, we, er, just thought it'd be a neat idea."

She does rather seem to have got away with it, though, hasn't she? She's not in prison. She hasn't repaid the money.
Not that I'm saying she's clever or anything but, well, y'know.

The same people who defended the collective punishment of Palestinian civilians, which meant thousands of innocent people died, are now outraged by the collective punishment of Maccabi Tel Aviv football fans, which will mean a few hundred innocent people miss a football match.

Well, if you think the bickering is turning people away...

If nothing else, it must be a drain of time & energy you could spend elsewhere.

I was sucked into their rows on X, sporadically butting in (fool!) but opted to follow neither on here broadly for the reasons you describe. Albeit without your generosity of spirit in ascribing it to "misunderstanding"; it often looked more like bad faith misrepresentation from where I'm standing.

Aye, replace "defined by" with "perceived as" and that's the crux of the issue right there. And not just for our misinformed Oxford chum.
And when you consider that all lot of people's experience of translation is piss-poor tourist guides/menus or impenetrable appliance user guides, I kinda get it.

Ah, a sadly common tale these days, of course.
Good luck!
(to all of us, frankly....)

Did they find a crumpled PDF down the back of the sofa that openAI can't cope with?

Incidentally, there's a tree down again. On the Church Hill Rd side, opp. Cedar Ave (so not far from where previous branches down, but right across the grass from there, next to the road). You can get round it without deviating much, but tree roots make for an uneven surface.

I'm not sure just standing and speaking is enough.

That whole thing last year about absolutely having to vote Labour to #GTTO ? a) it was never true, and b) is working as well as could be expected, i.e. bloody dreadfully. Mainly because it didn't get Tories out at all. Just gave us some different ones.

A dog whistle is a thing only (metaphorical) dogs can hear. In this case, the metaphorical dogs are actual racists.

So, either everyone that hears it is a racist, or it's not a dog whistle and is just racism.

Badenoch does realise that most of the people who agree with that first bit think that she doesn't belong here either, doesn't she?

Word to the wise: I get the feeling "they can't send you to jail for that" isn't necessarily watertight in the US at the moment.

Is that "confirm" as in tick a box, or provide actual evidence?

I started the joining process for Lab myself but stopped at the point they asked for bank details. Nothing about residency/citizenship up to that point.

To be fair, high-ups in IT depts are usually technically fairly limited. Their skills are in planning and organising (let's be generous to them). It's usually the grunts with no social skills who know how to do the tricky stuff.

"if this gives me ownership" is quite a big if.
And I confidently predict it won't, if history is any guide - as you say, we don't own it now.

Sadly, I'm not at all sure that the public do believe in those things. Not enough of the public, anyway.

But I do agree a codified constitution can't do any harm, can it? You can study constitutional law, so someone must know what counts as part of the constitution and what doesn't, surelyπŸ™‚

19.09.2025 14:58 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This is the internet, we all know everything, us😁
Our near neighbours have a codified one they update regularly: www.legifrance.gouv.fr/loda/id/JORF...
That said, theirs is a civil law system where everything is codified as a matter of course (& bureaucracy a French word for a reason!). Ours isn't.

19.09.2025 14:56 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

True, but if I may, I think the word you want is codified. It is written, it's just written all over the place.
And at this point, I'd probably pick a country other than the US as my example in support of codified constitutions, since they do rather seem to be ignoring theirs at the moment.

Acknowledge if you feel you must. But "praise"? I think not. I dunno about The Bulwark but such a remark is certainly bollocks.

I have met one really nice estate agent.
She wouldn't condone this "confession".
Not sure what's really being confessed here, unless it's yes, most (not all) estate agents are, deep down, twats.

Important from a political standpoint.

Fact he must have known about Epstein's activities & didn't report him to stop more young people being damaged is also important, IMHO.

I know which I would deem "most important". YMMV of course.
